Even though users have asked them to, the Threads team is not yet working on a separate inbox or direct messaging system for the social network. They will still use Instagram’s inbox. That being said, the business may make it easier to message Instagram from the Threads app.
Adwaith Varma, an app researcher, wrote on Threads about a new messaging button on users’ profiles that was part of an unreleased Threads feature. When people tapped that button, they saw a text box and a button that said “Send.” This let them quickly send a message to someone’s Instagram account.
Parhlo World asked Threads about this and they said it was a public test with a small group of people that is no longer going on. But this does mean that the company might add some features that let you at least start messaging straight from Threads.
Tap on the Instagram icon on their page and send a message through the Instagram inbox. This is the only way to send a private message to a user right now.
Threads is still very connected to Instagram, which is not great for people whose profiles are secret. Direct messages on Instagram are also not a good way to get in touch with someone if they don’t use that social network very often.
This move is different from its competitors, X and Bluesky. X: Twitter has had a direct message feature for a long time. The company has also released features like the ability to edit texts while Elon Musk was in charge. Bluesky launched its direct texting service earlier this year. They also plan to add end-to-end encryption in the future. Even though Mastdon doesn’t have a separate email, you can make a post that only certain people may see.

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has said in the past that a separate inbox might be possible if the company can’t make an integrated mailbox work. Threads isn’t working on making one yet. Mosseri explained his thought process in his message: on both Instagram and Threads, people follow the same group of people. But there are still people whose lives are very different, with two separate social graphs and some overlap. Threads should make a different inbox, we hope.
