During Apple’s M4 Mac week, the M4 Mac mini’s new, smaller design was meant to be the star of its launch. But a design flaw has been drawing all the attention.
Because the power button on the Mac mini is on the bottom, some users have come up with clever ways to get around this, such as 3D printing power button extenders.
Even though it’s a small thing, Mac fans have been talking about where the power button is on the redesigned Mac mini ever since it was revealed. The company finally spoke out about the power button controversy last week, but fans may not like what they had to say.
“You pretty much never use the power button on your Mac”
As of November 7, an interview on the Chinese video-sharing site Bilibili by John Ternus, VP of Hardware Engineering, and Greg “Joz” Joswiak, VP of Worldwide Marketing, was the first time Apple spoke out about the Mac mini power button scandal. Even though the talk is in Chinese, English transcripts show what Apple thinks about the power button.
“The most important thing is that you pretty much never use the power button on your Mac,” an Apple executive said when asked about it.
Ternus and Joswiak also said that Apple had to put the power button on the bottom of the M4 Mac mini because it was so small. Perhaps this is also an attempt to change the focus of the story about the M4 Mac mini back to its snack-sized remake. But is this a good way to get rid of users’ complaints about the design?
How you see the Mac mini makes a difference. Some people who use it as a desktop PC might agree with Ternus and Joswiak that they don’t need to press the power button very often. To be honest, it’s easier to use the shutdown menu in macOS to turn off your Mac than to press the button.
But this oversimplified view doesn’t take into account how the new Mac mini is different. People can easily unplug it and take it with them like a laptop because it’s so small. The new Mac mini is very small, so you’ll need to connect it to a computer at work or school to use it away from home. But you should still think about getting one. When people take their Mac mini with them, they need to turn it on and off a lot more often, so they are more likely to use the actual power button.
In the end, where the power button is on the Mac mini is not a deal-breaker, just like where the charge port is on the Magic Mouse is not ideal. This is a bad design mistake, though, especially for a brand that prides itself on good design.

I would have liked a power button on the top or side of the Mac mini that was covered in the same metallic finish as the rest of the body. Still, the new mini’s small size is really amazing. That power button was really getting in the way of the design this time, so maybe Apple will move it next time.
