The Met Gala is a big deal, whether you like or dislike celebrities. Those of us who aren’t too jaded get to see all the biggest stars take the biggest fashion risks of the year. Unlike an award show, this event supports avant-garde extravagance. It’s funny that Ed Sheeran’s outfit looks like something Troy Bolton wore in High School Musical 3. For those who think the whole thing is dull.
The Met Gala This Year, Though, Was A Test
“Oh, Katy Perry. “That’s it,” one X post said. Katy Perry looks like she is wearing a big dress in the picture, which has three-dimensional flower appliques on it. The pearly dress falls to the ground, and its long train turns into moss that looks like real grass, falling across the white and red Met Gala carpet.
More than a quick glance at the picture makes it possible to believe that the “Teenage Dream” singer wore this playful, forest-like dress to fashion’s biggest night. As part of the “Garden of Time” theme, the carpet at the Met Gala was white and green in all the other pictures. But in this picture, it’s beige and red. What makes Katy look like she’s going on a different carpet?
That’s a clear sign that this picture of Perry going popular is fake. Still, it’s been seen over 10 million times on X and liked over 300,000 times.
A few minutes later, someone else on X posted another picture of Perry. The reporters have caught her off guard by separating her lips a little, and she’s wearing a bronze corset that looks like a garden key. This picture, unlike the first one, has the right colors and scene for this year’s gala, but something still doesn’t seem right. The way the light hits her corset doesn’t look right, and her flower skirt looks like it was stuck on with tape.
How do you know it’s not just a weird picture and not a fake? Katy Perry isn’t going to the awards show this year, so no fashion magazine has written about what she’s wearing. Perry, meanwhile, liked both of the tweets that went popular but didn’t say anything about the fake posts.
Rihanna is always one of the best dressed people at the Met Gala. In the days before the event, she told her friends that she would get there in time for dinner, even though she’s notoriously late. For the event, she even dyed her hair pink.
At the beginning of the red carpet, a picture of Rihanna wearing a very fancy garden-themed dress came out. The shoulders puff out into a sculpture halo that is decorated with flowers, vines, birds, and other things. Again, though, the picture isn’t real, even though it’s been seen 2.6 million times. Don’t forget that Rihanna colored her hair pink. Not at all to be seen is Rihanna, just like Perry. People Magazine said that Rihanna had to miss the party on Monday night because she had the flu.
A fake Rihanna dress won’t cause too many problems. But since Rihanna has always done a great job with the Met Gala theme, would she really wear a flower dress to the “Garden of Time” party? These fake looks were too much like an AI deepfake Drake song. They lacked the creativity that makes the Met Gala special. Could an AI come up with Lana Del Rey’s creepy-cool woodsy look or Cynthia Erivo’s bright suit?
Zendaya, who was already in the lead for best dressed, wore a blue-green outfit that makes her look like a very stylish bad girl from a fairy tale. When a picture of Zendaya on the carpet hours later wearing a black leather dress and a flower crown showed up, I was ready to believe it was yet another fake. Zendaya walked the red carpet twice, in two different outfits, after missing the gala for five years. That’s not the half of it. It makes sense.

Still, every new picture of a star made people look at the carpet patterns, the flowers on the stair railings, and the paparazzi in the background to see if they looked a little off. Usually, the Met Gala gives us a chance to talk about the crazy clothes that famous people wear as a short break from our boring Monday nights. The rise of creative AI tools, on the other hand, makes us constantly aware that we shouldn’t trust everything we see online.
