Rooms is a 3D design tool that was made by people who used to work at Google. Its beta version was released on the App Store five months ago. The free iOS app is getting a big update today that adds a lot of new features that are designed to help people find new things. These include an activity feed, an explore page, the ability to browse by area, and more.
Rooms is an app for decorating your home that is in the cosy game area. From a library of more than 7,500 digital things, players can build and code complex 3D rooms and mini-games. Lua is a computer language that is also used in Roblox Studio. Users can change how things work by editing code.
A quarter of a million people have signed up for Rooms, up from 40,000 in 2023. For a small three-person team whose web platform came out less than a year ago, the growth in users is a big deal.
Jay Toff, co-founder, told, “When we launched last November, it was kind of an experiment to see if this idea we had would stick with people.” It made us happy that not only did people use it, but they also made a lot more and better rooms than we thought they would.
Toff used to work for Google in the AR/VR section. Nick Kruge, who has worked at Uber, YouTube, and Smule, and Bruno Oliveira, who used to work with him, are also on the starting team.
You could choose from three TikTok-style vertical feeds when the app first came out: a “For You” feed, a “Editor’s Picks” feed, and a “Recent” feed. But as Rooms grows, the owners want to make it easy for users to find other rooms made by other users and give credit to those who made them.
With today’s release of “Rooms 2.0,” the company added a “Trends” feed to the home screen to help promote well-known artists and their most-liked work. Over a dozen new sections have been added, such as “Games,” “Art,” “Fantasy,” “Nature,” and “Weird.” Users can now scroll through these as well. There’s also “Tribute,” a group of rooms based on well-known IPs like Minecraft, The Legend of Zelda, Hello Kitty, and more. Before, the feeds were put together by humans, but now there are algorithms that decide the order of the rooms that show up in the streams.
There is also a new page called Explore that gives you even more ways to find things. For example, you can look through user biographies, favourite games, and all-time games.
The app is also adding “Honeycomb View,” a triangular grid that lets you look through more than one room at once. People can tap on different rooms and zoom in or out to see more or fewer patterns.
“Our lack of discovery got in the way…” Everyone wants people to see their work. Creators also told us that they enjoy seeing other people’s rooms… “I think it will be very helpful to have dozens of new feeds where people can find content,” Toff said.
People who make rooms can now see how many likes and comments they get, as well as when their room is “remixed” or shared, on the new Activity tab. At the bottom of each room is an icon that shows how many remixes that room has in total.
The Remix feature, which lets people use someone else’s design as a model, was also improved to find knockoff rooms. This should stop people from making designs that look exactly like someone else’s that took hours to make. The company says that one in eight users have edited their rooms for more than two hours.
With a mesh optimisation method (which makes 3D objects less complicated), the team was able to render big rooms up to 20 times faster.
Most of the changes are to the iOS app, but Rooms is also making changes to the web version to add new sections and speed them up.
Rooms might make it easier to code on the app in the future by adding an AI-powered tool. It would “look at your code and tell you where there are obvious mistakes,” Toff said.
Previously claimed that the company was looking into a generative AI feature that could help designers plan rooms by making images for the walls and floors of the room. Toff said that they aren’t working on that function right now because it costs too much. But Rooms might add a paid subscription service in the future. For now, though, the company is waiting for the app to become more popular.

In a few months, Rooms will have a PC app on Steam. There might be an Android app too, but it’s not a top focus for the company right now.
