Next week, the show’s producers say there will be a “update” to the current ending “so we could say goodbye instead of just game over.”
There are a lot of times when we write about TV shows ending. (So often on Friday nights, in fact, that we have a regular show called Friday Night TV Murder Pile to remember the worst deaths.) Still, this is something new for us: No more episodes of Mythic Quest season 4 video game comedyon Apple TV+. The full Mythic Quest season 4 has already played. The streamer will let the show “update” its season finale next week, though, so it will be a better finish for the show.
Both parts of the news were revealed by series executives Rob McElhenney, David Hornsby, and Megan Ganz tonight in a statement. They said, “Endings are hard.” That being said, Mythic Quest is ending after four great seasons. We’re so proud of the show and the world we got to make, and we’re thankful to everyone who worked so hard on it. All of our friends, thanks for coming to play with us. Our friends at Apple, thank you for having faith in the idea from the start. It was all very sweet, but it was also pretty typical for a show that was ending. Then it said, “Because endings are hard, we made one last update to our last episode with Apple’s permission—so we could say goodbye instead of just ending the game.” Different news sources say that the new show will be available on Apple TV+ sometime next week.
Mythic Quest season 4 fans know that finished on a pretty shocking cliffhanger, with long-time rivals, friends, enemies, creative partners, and so on. Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) and Ian (McElhenney) share a shocking, quick kiss. The update might change that, but we don’t know what yet because we don’t know how big the addition will be. Apple has definitely done the right thing by letting the show say goodbye. Too many shows have ended with little more than “Thanks for the memories,” so this is one of the few things that streaming can do that regular TV can’t, and it’s a nice touch.
I was shocked to learn that Mythic Quest season 4 has been dropped on Apple TV+. I knew that the show wasn’t doing as well as in previous seasons, but I really didn’t think it was close to being canceled. On the other hand, I didn’t think the show would last much longer. I thought it would end on its own, not be killed. It’s possible that it will come back for a one-time show or even a crossover with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but I don’t think that will happen.
