Meta’s AI goals have been boosted by the fact that 500 million people in India use WhatsApp.
Susan Li, CFO of Meta, said on Wednesday that India is the biggest market for Meta AI use. This is a big deal because the product just came out in India a few months ago.
Li said on Meta’s earnings call for the second quarter that since it launched, people have used Meta AI for billions of searches.
“We’re seeing especially good signs on WhatsApp in terms of engagement and retention,” she said. “At the same time, India has become our biggest market for Meta AI use.”
Last year, Meta launched Meta AI for the first time in the United States. It can be found on Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, and the web. As of April, the company gave the robot the new Llama 3 model and put it into use in over a dozen countries.
Around the same time, Meta started trying Meta AI in India. However, all users couldn’t get it until June, after India’s general elections.
Getting AI to work better with the Indian market has been hard for the company because of cultural differences. TechCrunch reported in May that Meta AI made pictures of Indian guys mostly wearing turbans. Several people on X reported in July that Meta AI only made jokes about one religion and not about others. The results were all over the place, so Meta finally changed its formula to make it fair for religious jokes.
The social media giant added support for languages besides English last month. These languages are French, German, Hindi, Hindi-Romanized Script, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Meta AI is now available in 22 countries, with Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico being the most latest ones to join.
It will take 10 times as much computer power to train the next Llama 4 model, Zuckerberg said.
During the call, Zuckerberg said, “It’s likely that Llama 4 will need almost 10 times as much computing power as Llama 3, and future models will continue to do even better than that.”
Besides AI, Meta saw good signs for its social networks as well. The business said that “almost” 200 million people now use Threads. Meta said last month that the app that competes with Twitter/X had more than 175 million daily users. Zuckerberg also said that the company is seeing positive effects from young people in the U.S. using Facebook.

It was wrongly said that Mark Zuckerberg said the things about India and how Meta AI is used there. Those words came from CFO Susan Li.
