When Dark Winds first aired in 2022, it was a surprise hit. Now, two seasons later, the Western crime noir story has been approved for a brand-new third season. The news comes shortly after the second season’s last episode, which came out in September 2023. Graham Roland made Dark Winds, which is based on Tony Hillerman’s well-liked Leaphorn & Chee book series. In the 1970s, Dark Winds takes place in a small town in the Southwest. It follows Joe Leaphorn, a Navajo Tribal Police lieutenant played by Zahn McClarnon, and an undercover FBI agent named Jim Chee, played by Kiowa Gordon. They work together to solve killings, robberies, and other violent crimes in the Navajo Nation. In the first two seasons, the men face evils that have no explanation. Then, Leaphorn deals with the loss of someone close to him and looks for justice for his loved one. As the seasons change, so do the relationships between these two crime solvers, as well as Leaphorn’s relationship with his student and work partner, Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten). In addition to focusing on crimes and crooks, the series also features strange, spiritual aspects that affect how the characters think and feel.
Dark Winds has become a groundbreaking show for Native American portrayal, especially for Native American women, since it focuses on the Navajo Nation. This series has turned out to be something new for the viewers; it has a strong story and an unknown backstory. Dark Winds’ first season was a hit when it came out, earning a 100% approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 2 had 1.7 million viewers every week, which was a 146% increase in the number of people watching the show. The Western Heritage Awards from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum gave the pilot episode “Monster Slayer” the award for Outstanding Fictional Television Drama. The show has won multiple Vision Awards from the National Association for Multi-ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC) for Best Drama and Best Performance for McClarnon, who plays Joe Leaphorn as the show’s lead. If you like dark crime thrillers, harsh Westerns, or just want to see people go on cultural and emotional trips, then Dark Winds is full of all of this and would be good for any viewer.
You can be sure that there are more stories about Leaphorn and Chee to be told, even though this famous Western crime thriller’s third season won’t come back until 2025. Based on what we’ve seen so far, we can say that the next season (or seasons) will go deeper into the history, culture, and emotions of the Navajo Nation people. Dark Winds Season 3 Finale Breakdown and Spoilers:
Dark Winds is a pretty gloomy show overall, but the end of season three had both hope and sad truth. As expected, the three of them solved the case, but it took more effort than they wanted to give. Still, as Leaphorn, Chee, and Bernadette each tried to move on from the sad ending of the human trafficking case, mercy became the most important thing. In terms of theme, the tone of Dark Winds season 3 was maybe the most accurate of all the seasons.
