The Diplomat Season 2 has all the qualities of a thriller that has won awards. The Netflix show is a political thriller, but its author, Debora Cahn, who is known for working on the last seasons 2 of Homeland and four of The West Wing’s seven seasons, built it around real relationships that are worth caring about. When it comes to this show, world politics are almost as interesting as U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler using paper clips to hold her pants up.

Everyone is on edge because of the car bomb in Season 1, so Kate has more to think about than just her own political goals. There’s a lot of anger among the troops, a love triangle that’s not being looked at, and British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge is ready to go to war. This is the last thing Kate needs: a visit from Vice President Grace Penn. However, Season 2 is now even better with West Wing alum Allison Janney playing the part opposite the beautiful Keri Russell.

How Did The Diplomat Season 1 End?

In the last episode of the season, Prime Minister Trowbridge is about to attack Iran in response to the attack on the ship. He blames Iran for the attack. In the episode, Kate finds out that Trowbridge planned the attack himself as a way to boost his political power and increase his chances of maintaining his seat in office.

Just as things are about to break, there is another attack. At the very end of season 1, a car goes off near Hal and a few other staff members, leaving fans and Russell’s character wondering who, if anyone, made it out alive.

Russell told Deadline that the ending “totally shocked” him. “But Debora has been doing this for a long time.” She has been doing this for a long time. She’s really good at what she does. She is smart and knows what to do. “I think she had that plan for a while, but I was totally shocked.”

Cahn chose to leave the story on such a huge cliffhanger. It was her goal for it to make people want more, she told. “I wanted to combine all the different ways that political and personal relationships work in one event that breaks them apart all at once.”

Sewell told, “All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed.” He also hinted that he hopes the project will come back for more than one season. I like to believe that we have enough issues to last for a while. Who knows? I’d rather have someone with a better mind than me take over that than go with my stupid idea.

Meet the Cast of The Diplomat Season 2:

As Ambassador Kate Wyler, Russell plays her, and Sewell plays her husband, Ambassador Hal Wyler.

David Gyasi plays British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, Rory Kinnear plays Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge, Ali Ahn plays Eidra Park, and Ato Essandoh plays Stuart Heyford. Michael McKean plays U.S. President William Rayburn as well.

They made the show and Debora Cahn is one of the senior producers, along with Russell and a few others.

Where Is The Diplomat Season 2 Filmed?

London is where Season 2 is being shot, but other places in the U.K. may be added. Reports from Screen Daily say that season 1 was also shot in Oxford and Gloucester.

What Can We Expect from The Diplomat Season 2 Plot?

Kate thought that British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) ordered the attack on his own aircraft carrier, which leads to events in The Diplomat Season 2. Ali Ahn and she have to deal with the dangerous effects of this, and they also have to deal with the emotional effects of Hal (Rufus Sewell) and Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh), two people they care about but have trouble getting along with, getting hurt badly in the car bomb.

Of course, things aren’t always what they seem to be. As Kate learns more about the scandal, the plot thickens, with more suspects appearing and more innocent people being caught in the middle as the police try to find the truth. Kate has a hard time figuring out who she can trust and what everyone else is up to. She has to deal with Trowbridge, Roman Lenkov, Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), Meg Roylin (Celia Imrie), and many more, as well as her own staff and family.

Where Is The Diplomat Season 2 Available to Watch?

You can watch of The Diplomat season 1 right now on Netflix. The streaming service hasn’t said when season 2 will be available.

The Diplomat Season 2 Ending Explained:

Kate finally found out who really attacked the British military ship HMS Courageous at the end of last season. Margaret Roylin, played by Celia Imrie, did it without telling the Prime Minister so as not to put him in any kind of trouble.

The truth is that Roylin did not think of the idea by herself. And it was Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) who told her to do it. Once Penn is told that Kate and Hal (Rufus Sewell) know her secret, she is ready to step down as VP, at least until the chance to become nuclear czar comes up.

Of course, it’s not a good idea to put someone in charge of nukes who got a country to attack itself. Kate and Hal decide to tell the Secretary of Defense about Penn, or at least Kate does. Hal does what he always does and decides to tell the president about the news right away.

There is so much shock in the news that it could give the president a heart attack.

In the last few seconds of the show, Kate gets a call from a scared Hal telling her that the president has died, while Grace is surrounded by Secret Service agents who look confused.

Being president will now be done by Grace Penn, since the president has died.
