Apple finally showed off Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024 on Monday. This is the company’s long-awaited push into generative AI across its whole environment. The new function is called Apple Intelligence (AI, get it?) as earlier rumors said. The company said that the feature would be made with safety and totally unique experiences in mind.
“Most importantly, it has to understand you and be rooted in your personal context,” said Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. “This includes your routine, your relationships, your communications, and more.” “Of course, it has to be built from the ground up with privacy in mind.” This is more than just artificial intelligence. Apple has taken a big step forward with this announcement.
The company has been pushing this feature as an important part of all of its operating systems, such as iOS, macOS, and its newest release, visionOS.
Cook said, “It has to be strong enough to help you with the things that matter the most to you.” “It needs to be simple and easy to understand.” It needs to be deeply woven into how people use your products. Most importantly, it needs to know you and be based on your daily life, including your routine, relationships, communications, and more. It also needs to be built with privacy in mind from the start. All at once. This is more than just artificial intelligence. Apple has taken a big step forward with this announcement.
“Apple Intelligence is based on your personal data and context,” said SVP Craig Federighi. The tool will basically build on the personal information that people put into apps like Calendar and Maps.
It is based on big models of language and thinking. The company says that a lot of that work is done locally and uses the newest Apple silicon. Fedighi said at the event, “Many of these models run entirely on device.”
In spite of that, these customer systems aren’t perfect. Because of this, some of the hard work needs to be done in the cloud instead of on the device. Private Cloud Compute is being added by Apple. In order to protect the safety of this very private information, the back end uses services that run on Apple chips.
There’s also likely the biggest change to Siri since it was first announced more than ten years ago in Apple Intelligence. The company says that its operating systems now have the feature “more deeply integrated.” In iOS, that means giving up the familiar Siri icon in favor of a blue border that glows around the desktop when it’s being used.
You can do more with Siri than just talk to it. Apple is also adding the ability to type questions straight into the system to use its cutting-edge AI. It’s a recognition that voice isn’t always the best way to use these tools.
App Intents, on the other hand, lets you add the helper to different apps more directly. That will start with apps made by the company itself, but third parties will also be able to use it. The things that Siri can do directly will get a lot better with that feature.
The new feature will also greatly improve multitasking and make it possible for some apps to work together. That means that users won’t have to keep moving between Calendar, Mail, and Maps to do things like make meeting plans.
Most of the company’s apps will have Apple Intelligence built in. One example of this is being able to help write messages in Mail (as well as third-party apps) or easily reply with Smart Replies. This is a tool that Google has had in Gmail for a while and has been adding to it with its own generative AI model, Gemini.
With Genmoji (yes, that’s the name), the company is even adding the feature to images. A word field is used in this feature to make your own emojis. Image Playground, on the other hand, is an image maker that comes with apps like Freeform, Messages, Keynote, and Pages. Apple is also adding a separate Image Playground app to iOS and making it possible for other apps to use it through an API.
The Apple Pencil now has a new tool called picture Wand that lets users circle text to make a picture. It’s basically Apple’s answer to Google’s Circle to Search, but it’s only for photos.
It’s also possible to search for things like pictures and videos. The company says that these apps will have more natural language searches in them. With the help of natural language prompts, the GenAI models also make it easier to make slideshows inside of Photos. iOS and iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and visionOS 2 are just some of the operating systems that Apple Intelligence will be rolling out. With those changes, you can get it for free.
The feature will be added to the iPhone 15 Pro, the Mac, and the iPad. The feature will not be added to the basic iPhone 15, most likely because the chip can’t handle it.
Like everyone thought they would, Apple also revealed a partnership with OpenAI that will add ChatGPT to services like Siri. The function that is powered by GPT 4.0 uses that company’s image and text generation. Users will be able to access the service without having to pay a fee or make an account. They can still change to premium, though.

That will be out later this year for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. The company also said it would add support for other third-party LLMs, but they didn’t give many details. Google’s Gemini is probably pretty close to the top of that list.
