Analysts thought that the AI feature Apple showed off at WWDC in June could help the iPhone 16 get ready for another “supercycle.” People who follow the industry thought that the addition of Apple Intelligence, like the addition of 5G before it, might finally get people to change their devices.
When Apple shows off the iPhone 16 at tomorrow’s “It’s Glowtime” event in Cupertino, we’ll have a much better idea of what it looks like. In the meantime, though, the slow spread of Apple Intelligence is thought to could seriously hurt the supercycle potential.
Apple showed the world in June a way of using AI that was right in line with its goal statement of putting the user experience first. Generative AI is what Apple uses to make current experiences better. It is trained on small models instead of the huge black boxes that power services like Google Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
But, as Bloomberg points out today, delays could hurt the iPhone 16’s bottom line. A lot of big claims were made at WWDC, but most of them probably won’t come true until 2025. Of course, there are also important regional restrictions, such as those in the EU and China, which can make or break Apple’s finances in any given quarter. Also, ChatGPT functionality probably won’t be ready for launch.
The tech world was curious about whether Apple would be able to make a big splash in the creative AI race before WWDC. However, even though the demos at the developer conference were amazing, there is still a lot to do.
At the time this was written, Apple Intelligence could only be used on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. That will change at the show tomorrow, especially since more rumours say that the iPhone 16 line will be more similar. The base models should get A18 chips, and the Pros should get an A18 Pros chip, which makes sense.
Even though Apple and its owners care a lot about sales, Apple Intelligence is a huge, complicated project that should not be rushed out. Doing so could hurt the company’s bottom line in the long run more than a gradual rollout.
