You can now edit your direct messages on X, the social network that Elon Musk owns. This is one of the most-requested tools for direct messages.
The change message feature was added to X over the weekend for iOS users. An engineer at the business wrote about the rollout and said that soon the edit messages feature will be available on more devices.
Here’s how to use the new feature now that it’s out there:
- Open up any direct message chat in the X iOS app.
- You can either long press on a message you sent or tap the three dots next to the message to see more options.
- To change the message that was sent, choose “Edit message.”
A help page says that you can change the messages for as long as you want. During our tests, we found that you can also change older direct messages on the app. But you can only change five things about a message at a time. The social network has the same cap on how many times you can edit posts.
X said that it saves a record of messages that have been changed for security reasons, but at the moment it doesn’t show the history of versions of messages that have been changed.

It’s been a while since chat apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, and Messenger let users change their messages, so users expect to be able to do the same in messaging apps. With iOS 16, Apple also let people change iMessage texts they sent.
