The controversial update to X’s block function is now live. It lets people see your public posts even if you have blocked them. Some people are against this change because they think it’s unsafe for blocked users to see their posts.

People who have been blocked still can’t follow, interact with, or send direct texts to the person who blocked them.

In an old version of X’s help page, it says that users who are blocked can’t see a user’s list of followers and people they follow. The company has since changed the page to remove that mention. Users can now see the lists of people who have blocked them and who are following and following them.

It said that this change was made because the block function can be used to share and hide private or harmful information about someone, and the new version would make things clearer. Given that X lets users share information and keep their accounts secret, this mostly doesn’t work.

For example, X’s implementation of the block feature is different from how it’s usually used. When the company said it was going to change it, many people said it would make stalking and harassing users easier.

Tracy Chou, a software engineer and supporter of tech diversity, made an app that lets users automatically block people. She says that friction is important because people can get around blocks by making new accounts.
