You might be interested in what big tech companies know about you. That’s also what hackers working for the Russian government want.
Microsoft said on Friday that a hacking group called Midnight Blizzard, which is also known as APT29 or Cozy Bear and is thought to be backed by the Russian government, had hacked into some corporate email accounts. These accounts belonged to the company’s “senior leadership team and employees in our cybersecurity, legal, and other functions.”
It’s strange that the hackers didn’t try to get customer data or other common company data that they might have. The company says they wanted to know more about themselves, or more specifically, what Microsoft knows about them.
“The investigation shows that at first, they were going after email accounts to find information about Midnight Blizzard,” the company said in a blog post and an SEC filing.
Microsoft says the hackers “brute-forced” a legacy account with a “password spray attack” and then used the authorizations from that account “to access a very small percentage of Microsoft corporate email accounts.”
Microsoft didn’t say how many email accounts were hacked or what information the hackers got into or stole.
A request for word from the company did not get a response right away.
Microsoft used the news of the hack to talk about what they are going to do to make their company safer.
“This event has made Microsoft realize they need to move even faster right away.” As soon as possible, Microsoft will apply its current security standards to its old systems and its own internal business processes, even if this means disrupting those processes, the company wrote. Taking this step is important and will only be the first of many we will take to follow this philosophy. It’s likely to cause some trouble while we get used to the new reality.
Many people think that APT29, also known as “Cozy Bear,” is a Russian hacking group that has done a number of well-known attacks, including ones on SolarWinds in 2019 and the Democratic National Committee in 2015.
