If you hang out on X or Threads, where rude jokes come and go, you may have seen posts about “founder mode” like this one in the last few days:
You may have even seen this joke about “goblin mode.”
The commotion is related to a blog post that Paul Graham, head of Y Combinator and startup guru, wrote not long ago about how founders like Airbnb’s Brian Chesky often don’t follow the rules for running a large business. It’s common sense to hire good people and let them do their job, but Graham says that this often turns into “hire professional fakers and let them drive the company into the ground.”
He can’t say for sure what founder mode looks like because each founder does it in their own way, but he hopes that one day it will be taught as much as manager mode. While that lasts, the hot takes on his hot take keep coming.
The book is called “Founder Mode,” and it’s about how to run your business as a founder, which is different from how most businesses are run. Paul Graham gave it a cool name in his most recent piece, even though I already do it. Do you know who Paul Graham is? The y combinator?
