The rise in AI is increasing the need for data centers, which in turn increases the amount of water used. (In data centers, water is used to cool down the computers.)
FT says that between 2019 and 2023, water use will have increased by almost two-thirds in Virginia, which has the most data centers in the world, going from 1.13 billion gallons to 1.85 billion gallons.
Many people say the trend, which is happening all over the world, can’t last. The big data center company Microsoft says that 42% of the water it used in 2023 came from “areas with water stress.”
Google has one of the biggest data center bases. This year, the company said that 15% of the freshwater it uses comes from places with “high water scarcity.”

That being said, why can’t data centers use a closed-loop method to recycle water? A lot of them do, but a lot of the food they eat is set away to control the humidity, which means it evaporates. If you don’t add moisture to the air, it can become a good conductor of static electricity, which is generally bad for computers.
