Tesla has shown off a brand-new Model Y for China and other Asian-Pacific markets. This is the first big change to the SUV since it came out in 2020.
The redesign comes at a time when Tesla delivered fewer cars in 2024 than it did in 2023. It was the first drop from one year to the next since the company began selling mass-market cars in 2012.
In China and some nearby countries, the new Model Y could start shipping as early as March. It’s not yet clear when Tesla will bring this version to the U.S. and Europe. It took about four months for the updated Model 3 to come to those countries last year.
The new Model Y, which was codenamed Juniper inside the company, has a lot of the same changes that Tesla made to the Model 3 sedan in 2023. It also has some design features that come from Tesla’s other projects.
It looks like the new Model 3 because the front end is less bumpy and has a pointier edge. The new Model Y also doesn’t have bug-eye headlights. Instead, it has a single light bar across the front, like the Cybertruck and the Cybercab prototype. Tesla also got rid of the standard tail lights in favour of a single light that runs along the back of the car and is hidden under a small bulge in the hatch. Tesla says this “cross-car lamp” is the “first indirect reflective body panel taillight of its kind.”
The new Model Y has the same ambient light bar that goes around most of the cabin as the new Model 3. This bar can be changed to different colours. Tesla says the suspension has been better and road noise has been cut down. The back seats are powered and have a new touchscreen display for the people sitting in the back. The SUV is a few pounds lighter and can go a few more miles than the last one, but it doesn’t seem to do much better in terms of range or fuel economy.
Overall, the new design looks more like a lot of Chinese electric vehicles (EVs). These rivals have caused a price war and taken market share from Tesla, even though sales in China are at all-time highs.
In the past few years, Tesla has improved all four of its main electric vehicles: the Model Y, the Model 3, the Model S, and the Model X. The only really new thing since the Model Y is the Cybertruck, which is having a hard time getting a lot of buyers.

Tesla has given hints that a secret new model (or models) will be coming out later this year. That model will likely cost less than the Model 3 and Model Y, though, and it won’t start at $25,000. Elon Musk, the CEO, used to like that idea but has since given up on it.
