As of Wednesday, Samsung Medison, a division of Samsung Electronics that makes medical devices for diagnostic imaging, said it would buy Sonio, a company in Paris that makes AI-powered software for ultrasound workflows, for about $92.7 million (KRW 126 billion).
The French company’s AI assistant is meant to help obstetricians and gynecologists evaluate and record ultrasound exams. The company has also been given FDA 510(k) approval for Sonio Detect, a product that uses deep learning algorithms to improve the image quality of ultrasound scans in real time.
The company that makes Samsung Medison said that Sonio’s software would help it make AI-driven imaging processes that work better. Medison was bought by Samsung Electronics for $22 million in 2011. Samsung Electronics now owns 68.45% of the medical technology unit.
After the purchase, Samsung said in a statement that Sonio will stay a separate business that will continue to grow commercially and offer goods and services in France.
Cecile Brosset (CEO) and Remi Besson (CSO) started Sonio together in 2020. In August 2023, Cross Border Impact Ventures led a Series A round that raised $14 million. Tracxn says that the company has raised a total of $27.2 million. Elaia, Bpifrance French Tech Seed, OneRagtime, and a few angel investors are among the investors.
“With the purchase of Sonio, Samsung Medison will continue to keep our promise to use technology to make people’s lives better,” said Yong Kwan Kim, CEO of Samsung Medison. “Working together with Sonio will bring together the best ultrasound AI technology and reporting tools, which will completely change the way prenatal ultrasound exams are done.”

Samsung Medison’s well-established global ultrasound business and Sonio’s cutting-edge AI make for an exciting growth chance for both companies, said Brosset, CEO of Sonio. “In Samsung Medison, we have found a great and trustworthy partner to help us move forward with our mission and roadmap.” Sonio will continue to improve medical reporting technology and diagnostic software around the world, including in healthcare areas that aren’t well covered, as an independent company and in close partnership with Samsung Medison.
