Soon, Reddit users will see descriptions made by AI at the top of search results.
On Reddit’s earnings call on Tuesday, co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman told investors that the company is going to test search result pages that use AI to “summarize and recommend content.” He said that this would help people “dive deeper” into material and find new Reddit groups.
Huffman said that Reddit will use both its own technology and technology from other companies to power the feature. Later this year, the company will start the test.
Most people who have been keeping up with the company’s latest projects thought that Reddit would be interested in something like an AI-powered search tool. Reddit and OpenAI announced their partnership in May. This means that Reddit can use OpenAI’s big language models to create AI-powered features for Redditors and mods. OpenAI can also use the social network’s info as part of the deal. Reddit and Google made a deal like this earlier this year.
AI came up a lot on today’s call. Huffman also talked about how well Reddit’s AI-powered language translation tool works. He said that France is one of the site’s “fastest growing countries.” Aside from English, the company is also starting to add German, Spanish, and Portuguese translation.
Now that Reddit is a public company, this is the second time it has reported its quarterly profit. The company said it had 342.3 million weekly active users in the second quarter, which is 57% more than the same time last year. Sales went up to $281.2 million, which was more than the $253.8 million that Wall Street thought they would make.
