Apple finally changed the rules for the App Store so that developers from around the world can run iOS emulators for old games. You no longer have to hack your iPhone or download any sketchy software. The App Store gives you a high-tech emulator that you can use right away.
This change in Apple’s policy makes Riley Testut, the high school developer who made GBA4iOS a decade ago, look even better. When he released GBA4iOS, I taught half of my AP Statistics class how to play Pokémon on their phones in class—sorry, Mr. Cinelli. But back then, you had to use a bug to sideload the app. Apple finally found out and ruined our fun. GBA4iOS was no longer supported by fall 2014. RIP.
So why the change of heart now, after almost 10 years? Pressure from new laws in the European Union and growing calls for Apple to at least try to stop acting like a monopoly are likely to blame. Now, at last, Testut has put a Game Boy emulator right into the iOS App Store. It has already jumped to the top of the entertainment charts and the free app charts in general. Delta, the emulator, can run games from the DS, N64, SNES, and NES, as well as the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance.
Here’s what you need to do to play Pokémon on your iPhone:
- Get Delta here. Do not escape! Do not sideload! You can finally call it a normal game!
- How do you get games now? Now things get tricky. If you like to follow the rules like Paladin, you can use Epilogue’s GB Operator, a tool that can rip.ROM files straight from the Game Boy games you already own.
- They bought you a Pokémon Emerald disk when you were nine years old, but you might not have it. It is not illegal to download a simulator like Delta, but it is.Getting ROM files is the same thing as stealing, and we don’t support that.
- Not at all linked, but you know how when you have a question, you might look for related communities on Reddit that can help you find an answer?
- That being said, now that you have legally gotten your.ROM file, how do I put it on my phone? You can save it to Google Drive and then add it to the files folder on your iPhone. You can also email it to yourself and download it. To get what you want, you basically just want to do whatever is easy for you.You can get to the GBA file easily.
- Keep in mind that GBA4iOS can only read certain kinds of files. Do not open the.ZIP or.7Z file until you are ready to play the game. I used the iZip app, which is also free in the App Store. But you can usually just download it to your computer and do it that way.
- There is now a plus sign in the top right corner of Delta when you open it. You can then bring in games from iTunes or your files drive.
- It’s time to party!

You might just want to play an old game from your childhood. But don’t forget about ROM hacking groups; they’ve been changing old games for decades. These developers can make fixes for your that look like they were made by professionals.ROM files that let you play whole new games (though you should probably do the fixing on a real computer). Try Pokémon Emerald Rogue if you’re tired of Pokémon Ruby. You can use Delta anywhere in the world now that it’s in the App Store.
