Nothing doesn’t like to keep quiet about new books. The London-based phone company’s media push is mostly based on slowly leaking information about its products. So far, it’s been a good strategy (though a bit annoying for someone who covers this world), since most of the products it’s announced are first-generation ones that get a lot of attention from people outside of the company’s loyal fan group.
Nothing Phone (2a) is a great choice. It’s the third phone the company has made, but it’s clearly aimed at a different group of people than the main Phone (1) and Phone (2). You probably already know that the “a” bit means a cheap focus from other phones. In the past few years, that’s mostly been a game of which top features can be cut to lower the price while still making the phone feel as high-end as possible.
As promised in several leaks and official photos, the Phone (2a) was finally shown off at MWC 2024, albeit in the bright glow of a Barcelona night. In more specific terms, it was the star of last night’s Nothing after show party, shining in a glass box in all its cheap glory. Other than that, Nothing has been staying out of the way at the big mobile trade show, choosing not to be on the floor.
Operation Ivy quotes Plato’s story of Socrates and says, “All I know is that I don’t know Nothing.” Right now there aren’t many specifics. Having said that, the style does show us a lot about the item. As for the first thing, it’s not a surprise that Nothing has kept some of the line’s clear look. The light-up Glyphs are also back, but they only cover a few bands on top of the other models, so they don’t cover as much ground.
The two cameras on Phone (2a) are the same as on Phone (2), but they are now in the middle. I’m interested to know if that’s mainly a practical or an aesthetic choice. Since Nothing puts a lot of emphasis on design, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was moved just to make the device stand out from its flagships. No matter what, this is a nice-looking and (it looks like) well-made cheap phone. Some people might not like how busy the back is, but as always, I like how Nothing has done something different from the style most makers have settled on.
We don’t know much about the camera setup besides the number and direction, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not as good as the Phone (2). The way the cameras are set up does affect the cost of making the phone. We do know that the phone will have a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chip, which is a version that was made just for it.

There is still a big question mark over the price.
