Would you rather send all of your Windows work to the cloud? Microsoft might have the small computer that you can use at your desk.
At Microsoft Ignite 2024 on Tuesday, the tech giant showed off Windows 365 Link, a thin, fanless PC that links to Windows 365. Windows 365 is a virtual Windows machine that runs on a remote server and is stored in the cloud. It works like a regular Windows installation.
Windows 365 Link will be available in “select markets” in April of next year for a recommended retail price of $349. Microsoft says it boots up quickly (“in seconds”) and wakes up “instantly” from sleep. It also has a lot of ports for displays and other devices. It has four USB ports, audio and Ethernet jacks, and the usual range of wifi options, including Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. It can support two 4K monitors.
Windows 365 Link isn’t really a PC, though. The device can handle Microsoft Teams meetings and Webex talks, but it doesn’t have enough storage space and can’t run local apps. Its small, Windows-based operating system is also very locked down. Microsoft says that you can’t turn off the security features or the ability to log in without a password.
Microsoft isn’t really going after regular people with Windows 365 Link, of course. This is for businesses. Businesses can directly manage (and wipe) Windows 365 Link units and set them up to check for, download, and install updates on their own, according to the company.
Microsoft is proud of the fact that Windows 365 Link is better for the world than most desktops because it uses less power. The company says that the top shield of Windows 365 Link is made of 90% recycled aluminum alloy, the bottom plate is made of 100% recycled aluminum, and the motherboard is made of 100% recycled copper and 96% recycled tin solder.

Groups in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S. can now apply for the Windows 365 Link trial program. It might not end up like Microsoft’s last tiny PC, if all goes well.
