An extensive manhunt is underway in Maine for a US Army reservist suspected of killing 18 people and injuring 13 others. The FBI and police are searching for Robert Card, who is armed and dangerous, according to the reports.
As far as 50 miles (80km) away from the scenes of Wednesday’s shooting in Lewiston, schools and businesses have closed.
On Thursday night, police raided a property in neighboring Bowdoin. Police executed warrants in the town, which is about a 20-minute’ drive from Lewiston, on live television during the search. Using a megaphone, police yelled for Mr. Card to surrender and come out of the house “with your hands up.”
Several hours later, the police had left the scene. An official said police were “just doing their due diligence by tracking down all leads in order to locate and apprehend Card”.
Police Chief Dave St. Pierre asked the public to remain cautious as the gunman remains on the loose.
“It’s a little frightening to know that he’s out there and intends to kill and hurt people,” resident Lori Perricone told NewsNation. “The thought of this guy living in their state for quite some time without our knowledge is a little scary.”
The Lewis Police Department declared that Card, 40, is a suspect and that he should be taken seriously because he is armed and dangerous.
The authorities gave residents and business owners instructions to stay inside and off the streets.
The investigation has been turned over to the Maine State Police as a homicide investigation. Col. William Ross of the Maine State Police presented a chronology of events during a press conference on Thursday.
