South Korea’s SEOUL (AP) — Authorities say that Lee Sun-kyun, a famous South Korean actor best known for his part in the Oscar-winning movie “Parasite,” was found dead in a car in Seoul on Wednesday. This came after weeks of a thorough police probe into his alleged drug use.

At first, police and rescue workers found Lee in his parked car on a street in northern Seoul. They thought he was unconscious. According to the Seongbuk police station in Seoul, emergency workers later confirmed that he was dead.

The police were looking for Lee, 48, after getting a tip that he was missing.

They wouldn’t give any more information, like if they were sure Lee killed himself. But South Korean news sites, such as Yonhap, said that Lee’s family told police earlier Wednesday that he left home and left a note that looked like a suicide note.

In 2020, Lee was in “Parasite,” which won the Oscar for best picture and three other awards. When it came out, the class spoof was the first non-English-language movie to win best picture at the Academy Awards. It was also the first South Korean movie to win an Oscar. Lee played the head of a rich family in the movie.

Lee was also in the group that won a Screen Actors Guild award in 2020 for best motion picture ensemble cast. For his role in the sci-fi movie “Dr. Brain” last year, he was also up for best actor at the International Emmy Awards.

Before “Parasite,” Lee was already a well-known actress in South Korea. He became famous for his part in the hit TV drama “Coffee Prince” (2007). The medical drama “Behind the White Tower” (2007), “Pasta” (2010), and “My Mister” (2018) also made him well-known.

Lee was being investigated by the police because it was said that he used drugs at the home of a bar waitress. Yonhap says Lee said he didn’t know what he was taking and that he was tricked into taking the drugs. But the investigation led to a lot of coverage in tabloids and unverified online rumors about his private life and the drugs he was said to be using. Lee sued two people, including the waitress, saying they did something bad to him and wanted to get money from him.

He first went to a police station in Incheon, a city near Seoul, to be questioned in late October. He bowed deeply several times and told his friends and family he was sorry. “I’m sorry for my family members who are going through too much pain right now.” “I am truly sorry to everyone again,” he said.

Wednesday, police in Incheon said they would no longer be looking into Lee, but they would keep looking into the two people Lee had sued.

South Korea has strict rules against drugs, but the number of drug-related crimes has been rising sharply over the past few years. As of last week, the National Police Agency said it had arrested 17,150 people this year for allegedly making, transporting, selling, or using illegal drugs. This is the most people ever arrested in a single year.

South Korea has had the highest suicide rate among wealthy nations for a long time. A number of famous people, including K-pop stars, lawmakers, and business leaders, have also killed themselves there. Experts say that many of the famous suicides were caused by mean and hurtful online comments and severe cyberbullying.

“Lee was accused of some things, but they haven’t been officially proven.” But the news has been very direct about Lee’s personal life… Kang Youn-gon, a professor of media communication at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, said, “I think that’s wrong.”

Lee’s wife, actress Jeon Hye-jin, and their two boys will miss him.
