A well-known and respected study scientist named Andrej Karpathy said today that he is leaving OpenAI. Karpathy is leaving the top AI company for the second time. He said it’s not because of any event, problem, or drama.
Karpathy was one of the founders of OpenAI and first left the company to work for Tesla in 2017. When he left Tesla in 2022, he was in charge of the autopilot team. He returned to OpenAI almost a year ago. Karpathy has also gained a huge following on social media and YouTube by sharing thought-provoking articles about the new field and movies that explain how AI works.
“Hey everyone, yes, I did leave OpenAI yesterday. What “happened”? It wasn’t caused by any event, problem, or drama, Karpathy said. “But please keep the conspiracy theories coming; they’re very entertaining:)”
“Really, it’s been great working at OpenAI for the past year. The team is strong, the people are great, and the roadmap is very exciting. I think we all have a lot to look forward to.” I’m going to work on my own projects for now and see what happens. That might look like something to people who have been following me for a while.
The Information was the first to report Kartphaty’s leave. It comes after a rough year at OpenAI, during which Sam Altman was briefly fired as CEO but then reinstated in a very eventful week. The company told TechCrunch that Karpathy’s work was given to a different analyst, but it didn’t say who it was.

Now that Karpathy’s X bio has been changed, it used to say “building kind of a J.A.R.V.I.S at @OpenAI,” which meant that he was working at the company on an AI Assistants project.
Earlier this year, he talked about why he was writing this. He said he wanted to write a word that would describe an AI that is helpful and can talk to people.
