Mark Wahlberg Is A Dad Like All The Others
“My teen son or daughter won’t stop playing video games.” “My daughter thinks she knows everything, and my wife Rhea Durham and I are brain dead in a lot of ways,” he tells PEOPLE at the Las Vegas opening of his movie “The Family Plan.”
The Oscar-nominated actor said on The Talk in October 2022 that he and his family had moved from Los Angeles to Nevada so that they could have a “better life and pursue their dreams,” whether that was his daughter becoming an equestrian, his son becoming a basketball player, or his younger son becoming a golfer.
Wahlberg, 52, told PEOPLE in October that Durham, 45, and their children Grace, 13, Ella, 20, Brendan, 15, and Michael, 17, had “adjusted nicely” to their new lives. “The kids are all out at school, and everybody’s happy,” he said.
Wahlberg plays a former killer who is now a suburban dad who is trying to make the same move to Nevada. This time, though, it’s because his cover has been blown and he needs to find safety in the bright lights of Las Vegas.
During a funny part of the movie, Wahlberg and co-star Michelle Monaghan sing along to Vanilla Ice’s hit song “Ice, Ice Baby.”
Wahlberg tells PEOPLE that if the scene made him think of his old rap career as Marky Mark, “Marky Mark wouldn’t have done Vanilla Ice.” I’m a little more willing to change now. It seemed like a fun thing to do.

Director Simon Cellan Jones also came up with about ten other songs that he thought would work for the scene the night before shooting.
Wahlberg says, “Most of them were like these strange Irish folk songs.” “The only song we knew was “Ice, Ice Baby,” and I just thought it would be funny.
“Michelle, she showed what she was made of, and she loves the song,” he says of Monaghan, who plays his wife in the movie. “She knew everything. The first verse comes first, and the second line comes last.
Wahlberg worked just as hard on the part as Monaghan did. Wahlberg spent four months practicing speaking French with his movie wife for one scene.
“He works harder than any other actor on the show,” Jones tells PEOPLE. “He does it. He worked on his French for months for a scene where he talks it. He’s going to try to do all the moves himself for the fight scene. He shows up. “He comes in and makes a promise.”
