TikTok seems to want to compete with Google’s search power after being the leader in social media. Told by the company that it is testing a feature that will let users take or share a picture to find similar items in TikTok Shop.
The first person to notice the function was X user Jonah Manzano. All users in the US and Southeast Asia can use it. The new feature will show up as a camera icon in the search bar in TikTok Shop for users who can see it.
Let’s say you like the plate you’re served on a lot at a restaurant. You could start the TikTok app and take a picture of it to see if TikTok Shop has anything similar for sale. Let’s say you’re shopping online and come across a top that you like but think is too pricey. You could save the picture and then post it to find something similar that costs less.
You could always use text descriptions to find specific things on TikTok Shop, but now you don’t have to. With its visual search tool, Google Lens, for years, Google has let people use picture search to find things to buy. Amazon, another tech giant that TikTok wants to fight with, also has image search right now.
In 2022, Google execs said that TikTok and Instagram are putting pressure on their main search product. This shows that TikTok has already done a lot to compete with Google’s search giant. With this new feature, TikTok wants people to not only use its app to find new goods, but also buy them through TikTok Shop.
With this new feature, the company isn’t just going after Google or Amazon; it also wants to go after other companies that offer image search tools for shopping, like Klarna or even new businesses like Cherry.
TikTok just recently announced that there are now more than 15 million sellers on TikTok Shop around the world, with more than 500,000 in the United States alone. It put more than $400 million into making the site safer and hired more than 7,500 people to help keep TikTok Shop safe.
TikTok has put a lot of money on online shopping because it thinks TikTok Shop will be its next big source of income. The company’s online shopping is another way to keep people on its app instead of others. TikTok wants people to spend more time and money on its e-commerce product, so it is adding to and improving TikTok Shop.

The company is growing its online business even though it might be banned in the U.S. The Chinese company ByteDance owns TikTok. In April, President Biden signed a bill that will ban the app if it doesn’t sell it within a year.
