Dear Mother.
These are the names that Beyoncé’s fans all over the world have given her. No matter if you say “mother” or “muva,” the idea is the same.
The global star was even named “Mother of the Year” for 2023 by Grindr, a famous LGBTQ+ dating app, which polled more than 10,000 users. This use of the word “mother” comes from LGBTQ+ ballroom culture; it means that Beyoncé is a strong but loving leader of a fandom.
But Beyoncé became a mother for the first time in 2012, when she and Jay-Z had their first daughter, Blue Ivy, who will be 12 years old on Sunday.
No matter how the title is read, Beyoncé has made motherhood the most important thing in her work.
Beyoncé and being a woman
Riché Richardson, an African American writing professor at Cornell University and the Africana Research Centre, made a class called “Beyoncénation” to look at how Beyoncé has affected fashion, music, business, social justice, and motherhood, among other things.
She says, “Beyoncé has had a huge effect on national femininity.” “It’s interesting because Black women have traditionally felt that they have been through hard times, which is why marriage and education have been seen as incompatible.”

He said that some people wonder if it’s possible for Black women to have everything.
“What makes today’s women, like Beyoncé, different and special is that they don’t always see marriage as a barrier to success or their well-being as women,” she says. “In fact, they link it intimately to their possibilities for well-being.”
It’s a more positive view that Black women can make a difference as moms and in many other roles, says Richardson.
With an eye on the whole world, Erik Steinskog, an associate professor of musicology at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, said the same things.
Steinskog felt driven to make a Beyoncé course in 2017 that was about gender and race.
“I, at the time and still, see Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ as one of the masterpieces of the 21st century of music,” he shares. “I wanted to introduce Black feminism to my students as sort of a contrast to how feminism is often perceived in Europe.”
The spotlight is on motherhood
Richardson says that Beyoncé has always been a Renaissance woman, and her new album “Renaissance” shows that even more.
Richardson saw the Renaissance World Tour in Atlanta and says that there was a strong sense of motherhood throughout the show.
When Beyoncé performed “Black Parade” and “My Power,” her daughter Blue Ivy danced right in front of the crowd. The song’s lyrics include “that’s my bloodline on the frontline.”
For Richardson, the most interesting part of the show was seeing Beyoncé proudly switch into mother mode during her act.
„When I saw Blue Ivy come out and realise she was just leading, I thought it was a reference to the Bible verse, ‘The little child shall lead them.’ “It made me cry,” she says. “That was without a doubt the most moving part for me.”
Steinskog says that Beyoncé sees motherhood as part of a “spectrum” of jobs for women.
“What she wants to do is sort of highlight a number of different ways to be to be a woman or be feminine, including queer femininity, trans femininity,” he explains.
Here’s a development of this idea: the “Renaissance” movie is about Beyoncé’s family and how the Renaissance World Tour works. The singer of “Cuff It” talks about how she handles her job and being a mother with ease.
She says in the movie, “Being on stage and being a mother at the same time just reminds me of who I really am.”
Crystal Torres, who plays the trumpet, was also very important on tour and in the movie. Torres appeared with Beyoncé even though she was clearly pregnant. Beyoncé showed Torres as a mother and singer in the movie.
Richardson says that Beyoncé’s close family and friends are another sign that parenting and family have always been important to her. She says that Beyoncé’s relationship with her mother shows how the superstar learned early on how important the job is.
Richardson says, “There are a lot of things to admire about Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles. It’s not a surprise that Beyoncé is such a good and responsible mother.”
