On Thursday, three days after the country’s deadliest earthquake in years killed 135 people, survivors were getting better in the hospital as rescue teams rushed to bring supplies.
The number of deaths rose from 134 the day before, according to the state news agency Xinhua. Rescuers were still looking for people who were buried because the ground was so soft in northwest Qinghai Province.
The strong, weak quake that happened in Qinghai and the nearby province of Gansu on Monday night hurt almost 1,000 people.

Doctors treated people with minor injuries at the Jishishan County People’s Hospital in Gansu on Thursday. They gave them intravenous drips and looked at X-rays of buildings that had been damaged by the quake.
“I really want to go home,” a middle-aged woman who was waiting for treatment on her hurt leg told AFP.
“But my home was destroyed, so I don’t know where I can go,” she said.
“People are still scared about the aftershocks; they can’t sleep well because there is nowhere safe to go,” an official from Jishishan county told AFP.
It happened at 11:59 p.m. on Monday and was a magnitude-5.9 quake. Its epicenter was about 100 kilometers from Lanzhou, the city of Gansu province.
There were then dozens of smaller aftershocks, and the government said that in the next few days, shakes with a magnitude of more than 5.0 were possible.
Rescuers from across the country seemed to have reached more survivors in rural Gansu overnight. AFP reporters saw that a lot of blue tents provided by the government had been set up in Jishishan to replace the makeshift shelters that people had built right after the earthquake.
At least 12 people are still missing in Zhongchuan Township, Qinghai province, after a “sand boil” disaster on Tuesday buried people alive.
