As the gritty multiverse series returns for another season of episodes based on the 2016 sci-fi novel of the same name, Dark Matter season 2 will use a completely different storytelling technique than its first run. Even though the characters’ journeys were hinted at at the end of Dark Matter season 1, the return of Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly as members of the ensemble for season 2 will give the Apple TV+ adaption a strong sense of continuity. The cliffhanger conclusion had me giddy, but for a fascinating reason.

Jason Edgerton’s character Jason Dessen and other characters travel across several worlds that are different from his own due to Dark Matter’s interdimensional travel. The idea was taken straight from Crouch’s book, and the actual author of the book is also the showrunner for Dark Matter on Apple TV+. Even though Crouch has altered the Dark Matter novel, season 1 largely maintains everything while adding elements that are tasteful and realistic-feeling. The author/showrunner of Dark Matter season 2 has a very different idea.

What Does “The Box” Mean in Dark Matter Season 2?

Dark Matter is a multiversal property, despite the fact that it may not appear to be at first. However, it approaches the multiverse in a very different way than comic book properties. Jason 2 creates a box that can suspend a person in superposition and enable them to travel down an endless hallway in the multiverse, but only if they ingest a substance that blocks a specific area of the brain that hasn’t developed to understand what’s occurring. When a character in Dark Matter makes a choice, another duplicate of them is created somewhere in the multiverse. For example, if you choose steak for dinner instead of chicken, there is an alternate reality where you choose chicken, which may be quite different from your current life.

The Dark Matter season 2 is currently under production. Watch the first season of Dark Matter on Apple TV+ and keep checking for more information and coverage of the program.

Constellation Dark Matter Season 2 Apple TV+ Had Two Look-Alike Shows:

Constellation was likely cancelled by Apple TV+ because of negative reviews and low viewing, but I believe there was another element at play as well. Though incredibly inventive, the concept of Constellation isn’t all that different from Dark Matter. Each show’s protagonists are imprisoned in a different reality, and their main goal is to return home so they can be reunited with their original spouse and child.

They aren’t the same, of course. While Dark Matter’s interdimensional travel transports Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton) through an endless number of different realities, Jo’s journey is situated between just two realms. However, just as Jason2 was the primary antagonist of Dark Matter, the Jo who was supposed to rise from the grave was strongly suggested to be a very shady figure. Although I believe there were sufficient differences for both Constellation and Dark Matter to flourish, I can understand why AppleTV+ would have decided it would be best to terminate one of them.

Dark Matter Season 2 Will Expand Beyond Its Source Material:

Everything from the novel occurs in the program, even though not all of the events in Dark Matter season 1 occur in the book. By including new individuals in the conflict and altering some scenes and plots, Crouch expands on his 2016 book, but he also concludes season 1 at the same moment as he did the book. In both versions of the story, the Dessen family escapes into the universe from all the multiversal Jason copies, although the live-action version subtly indicates that many of the original or pre-existing people are still in the plot.

Given that Alice Braga’s character, Amanda Lucas, makes a significant shift in the program by opting to stay in the futuristic Chicago, it is evident that Crouch did not simply decide at the last minute to carry on the plot. She merely leaves Jason with a message and disappears while he is sleeping in the book. It seems clear in hindsight that Crouch never intended to merely adapt the events of the single Dark Matter book, but rather to set up a lengthier run, especially as Jimmi Simpson’s Ryan Holder plays a significantly larger part in the narrative than his literary counterpart.

Why Ending the Story in Dark Matter Season 2:

The news that Dark Matter season 2 would get a makes me very happy because I never thought I would ever find out what occurred after the show ended. Nevertheless, I don’t want the show to continue only for the sake of it. Many shows eventually become old and outlive their usefulness, and I wouldn’t want that to happen to a show with such a fantastic premise.

A fantastic finale that reflects the novel’s conclusion would be Dark Matter season 2 if it concludes in a way that is both intriguing enough to keep me wondering yet limited enough to leave it alone. I wouldn’t necessarily be against Dark Matter season 3, but I believe it’s much more crucial that the adaptation is strong from start to finish. Even if the program is still being written by the same author, it runs the risk of damaging the original tale the further it goes beyond the last page of the source material.

Furthermore, Blake Crouch’s completion of Dark Matter season 2 would allow him to focus on adapting some of the other novels from his tremendous back catalogue. I wouldn’t be shocked if this were the idea, considering Dark Matter season 1 even hinted to the possibility of a Blake Crouch sci-fi universe by revealing the titles of two of his previous books. Personally, I’d love to see him adapt 2019’s Recursion in live-action, and I’ve seen Crouch discuss the notion in the comments area of his Dark Matter-promoting social media posts.
