ByteDance said that in November, it will no longer offer TikTok Music as a music streaming service.
On its website, TikTok Music says, “We’re sorry to say that TikTok Music will be closing on November 28, 2024.” People in Indonesia, Brazil, Australia, Singapore, and Mexico could use the service.
The message said that subscribers could still use the service until November 28. After that date, renewals would be automatically cancelled. As of October 28, users could move their sets to other streaming services. Users who want to get their money back had until November 28, tho.
With our “Add to Music App” tool, hundreds of millions of songs have already been saved to playlists on partner music streaming services. We are shutting down TikTok Music at the end of November so that we can focus on our main goal, which is to make music streaming services even more popular and valuable for artists, songwriters, and the industry as a whole. This was announced by Ole Obermann, who is the Global Head of Music Business Development at TikTok.
TikTok said it will keep working with music streaming services instead of going up against them. The “Add to Music” feature was added to TikTok in February. It lets users add songs straight to a playlist on Apple Music, Amazon Music, or Spotify.
The idea for TikTok Music came from a ByteDance product called Resso. Resso was first released in India and Indonesia in 2019 and then spread to Brazil.
ByteDance changed the name of Resso to TikTok Music in Brazil and Indonesia in 2023. Soon after, they brought the change to Singapore, Australia, and Mexico. Indian law banned Resso at the beginning of this year.
TikTok has become a popular way for people to find new music. It also helps artists get their music out there, which increases their views. A study by TikTok and the entertainment data research company Lumiate found that TikTok has a big effect on making artists more valuable by streaming their videos and helping people find new music.
Bytedance, which also runs SoundOn, probably thought that TikTok’s popularity would help drive streams within its own ecosystem, but the service only went live in a few markets around the world.
TikTok’s relationship with the music business has been shaky lately too. Universal Music Group took its music library off of the service earlier this year because of an argument over royalties. Because of this, TikTok called UMG out for “false narrative and rhetoric.” A halt was called and a new deal was signed in March.

A separate case is being fought by TikTok against a bill that could make the short video app illegal in the United States. This could have made it harder for ByteDance to bring TikTok Music to new areas like the U.S.
