Recently, there was a rumor going around that Google is “sunsetting Gmail” this year. This may be why you’re here. It’s said to be an email from Google that says “the journey of Gmail is coming to a close.” This is one version we saw on Twitter/X:
Do not worry, Gmail is not going away. However, one way to view it is, which you can read about below. Most people will have been set to the “new” Gmail view a long time ago, so unless you have been asking for the “basic HTML” view, nothing should have changed for you.
Another day, another Google project dies. Beginning in January 2024, the company will no longer support Gmail’s basic HTML view, which lets users see their emails in a very simple way.
The company changed its help page to say that after the deadline, Gmail will switch to the Standard view on its own. Hacker News users said they got an email from Google telling them the feature would be shut down.
“We’re writing to let you know that as of early January 2024, the Gmail Basic HTML view for desktop web and mobile web will no longer work.” “The Gmail Basic HTML views are old versions of Gmail that were replaced by more recent versions more than 10 years ago. They do not have all of Gmail’s features,” the email says.
As of now, if you try to view the HTML version, Google will tell you that it is made for “slower connections and legacy browsers” and ask you to confirm that you don’t want to use the standard version.
You can’t chat, word check, use search filters, make keyboard shortcuts, or use rich formatting in the HTML version. But it can be helpful when you’re in a place with slow internet or just want to check your email without any other features. It’s not clear if Google is going to add a mode for days when you can’t connect.
Google is focused on adding AI-powered features to its products right now, and Gmail is one of them. The company added Duet AI last month to help people write emails. It let the Bard chatbot connect to Google accounts last week, so you can ask it about your email past.

We’ve made changes to this post since it was first published on September 25, 2023. It now talks about how this change went live in February 2024 and a hoax that seems to be connected to it.
