Many people don’t like how Google’s Gemini implementation for AI picture generation works. The search and mobile giant is still adding AI to more of its services, though. Today, Google launched a bunch of new features for phones, cars, and wearables. You can now use Gemini to write messages, have AI create captions for photos, have AI summarize texts for Android Auto, and use Wear OS to get to passes.
The new features were shown off at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. Google has been a big part of MWC for years as the company behind Android.
This week, the company said, Google Messages will get a tool that lets you use Gemini in the app. The tool is in beta right now, and it only works with English.
Google is also adding a feature to Android Auto that reads out longer text messages and puts group talks in the right context. This tool was first announced last month, and it also gives you quick ideas for how to answer.
The search giant is also releasing some tools at MWC that will help people with disabilities. First, the company’s Lookout app will now use AI to create captions for pictures that don’t have any or are missing alt text or captions. This app helps visually impaired people with things like food labels and documents. The tool is now being rolled out to all users around the world who can use English. Google added an AI-powered helper to the Lookout app last year, which let users ask questions about pictures.
Google is also making Lens in Maps work better with screen readers. TalkBack will read details about places and signs when a user points their phone’s camera in that direction.
Google is adding the ability to write notes by hand to documents on Android phones and tablets, and you can use your finger or a pen to do this. You can draw attention to certain parts of a paper with a pen of a different color or style.
The company is also adding support for Spotify through an output option on the home screen of Android phones. In other words, Spotify lets you pick up where you left off with a song or program and continue listening to it somewhere else. This function used to only work with YouTube Music.
The Fitbit app is also getting updates from Google that will let it get data from more places, like AllTrails, Oura Ring, and MyFitnessPal. Last year, the company changed the app’s layout to have three tabs. On the Today tab, you can see information like how much you exercised, how many steps you took, how many calories you burned, and how many floors you went. The “You” tab shows Fitbit info as well as data from other apps.

This statement also includes a few changes that have to do with Wear OS. From now on, you can use your watch to access Google Wallet passes like event tickets, flight passes, gym memberships, and loyalty cards. Voice commands let you find your way to public transportation. Besides that, you can either mirror directions from your phone or get guidance directions based on a compass.
