As Netflix Said No, Other App Developers Are Talking About Releasing Vision Pro

Netflix was the first to decide not to make a specialized app for the Apple Vision Pro, and now YouTube has done the same. People who want to watch YouTube movies will have to use a web browser, just like Netflix subscribers.

A YouTube spokesperson told TechCrunch, “We’re excited to see Vision Pro launch, and we’re supporting it by making sure YouTube users have a great experience in Safari.” The company didn’t say why it chose to drop out. Also, YouTube hasn’t said if they will support Vision Pro in the future.

People love to share videos on YouTube, so the fact that they’ll have to use Safari to watch YouTube videos will be disappointing for customers. This also means they can’t use YouTube’s offline downloads function, which is pointless when they’re on a plane. Notably, YouTube has an app for Meta Quest, a competing headset.

Yesterday, Netflix told us that it has no plans to make a separate app for the device. No changes are being made to the iPad version either.

MacStories says that a lot of other companies, including Meta-owned platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and WhatsApp, may also not be releasing apps that work with each other. This might not be the case when Vision Pro comes out on February 2, though. Meta wasn’t able to reply right away to our request for a comment. YouTube Music, Roku, Snapchat, DoorDash, Bumble, and Lyft are some of the other apps that are missing.

Bloomberg says that Spotify has also decided not to release a new app. However, the music streaming service is not putting its iPad app on the Vision Pro shop either. They told us they couldn’t confirm the rumors about their plans to make an app for the Vision Pro.

Many media companies are apparently not interested in Apple’s mixed-reality headset, which is, to say the least, interesting. Plus, they all have apps for the iPhone and iPad, which makes it simple for them to add apps to the Vision Pro shop. Apple says that unless makers say they don’t want to be a part of it, their iPad apps in the App Store will automatically show up in the Vision Pro store.

Developers aren’t likely to support Apple’s new project, which isn’t a surprise since the tech giant just changed the rules for the App Store to follow a court order. Now, Apple decides which apps can include a link or button to their websites. There are many other exceptions to the new rules, such as a 27% fee for purchases made outside of the app shop.

In the past, Spotify said in a statement that “imposing a 27% fee for transactions made outside of an app on a developer’s website is outrageous.” A person familiar with the situation told Bloomberg that Spotify’s apparent rejection of Apple’s newest device has nothing to do with its public anger over the new App Store rules.

Still, some businesses are ready to take part. There are almost twenty apps that will offer entertainment on the headset. These include TikTok, Disney+, Max, Discovery+, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Fubo, Crunchyroll, ESPN, NBA, MLB, PGA Tour, Red Bull TV, IMAX, and MUBI.
