This past weekend was a busy one for trying to form a union at U.S. Apple stores. At one store, the union decided to allow a strike, while at another store, workers voted against joining a union.
It was in 2022 that workers in Towson, Maryland, formed the first official union at an Apple shop. The workers in that union, which is part of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, decided on Saturday to go on strike. The date of this possible strike has not been set yet.
The IAM CORE Negotiating Committee said in a statement, “Today’s vote is the first step in showing our unity and sends a clear message to Apple.” “The fact that the strike sanction vote went through shows how dedicated IAM CORE is to fighting for workers’ rights and well-being even when things get tough.” We are still committed to making real improvements that help all workers as we continue to talk with Apple management.
The union says it has been in talks with Apple since January 2023 about things like pay, work-life balance, and unpredictable schedules.
An Apple spokesperson told Bloomberg, “We deeply value our team members and we’re proud to offer them the best pay and benefits in the industry.” “As always, we will treat the union that represents our team in Towson with respect and truth.”
Bloomberg also said that a vote to join the Communication Workers of America and form a union at a shop in Short Hills, New Jersey, failed. The CWA filed an unfair labor practice charge against Apple before the vote. They said that Apple was punishing one of the workers at the store by setting up “unprecedented multiple meetings with his supervisor and denying requests for leave.”

The National Labor Relations Board said earlier this week that Apple broke federal labor laws in 2022 when they took union flyers and questioned employees about efforts to form a union at the Apple store in New York’s World Trade Center.
