Let’s say you’re sitting on a park bench and looking at your phone while doing nothing. Boom. This thing is taken by someone and they run off with it. There are already some safety features built into Android and iOS, but what about the few seconds when the phone is unlocked? Is there a way to wipe it from afar?
In that short time, thieves can get to a lot of data. Each second is important. Google revealed on Wednesday and at its Google I/O 2024 developer conference that Theft Detection Lock, a new feature for Android that will help protect users from this growing threat, will be coming soon. The AI-powered feature will lock the device instantly when it is activated.
Google says, “If a common motion linked to theft is detected, your phone screen locks quickly. This makes it harder for thieves to get to your data.” A trigger like this would be something that starts moving quickly in the opposite direction all of a sudden.
Google is also adding a feature called “Offline Device Lock” that will protect the device if it is removed from the internet on purpose. Things like failing to authenticate the phone over and over again will set off that feature.
In the next update, there will also be a feature that makes it harder for thieves to wirelessly reset your device to factory settings. Google says that if someone steals your device and causes a reset, they won’t be able to set it up again without knowing your device or Google account information. “This makes a stolen device useless, which makes people less likely to steal phones.”

When the device is logged in from a public area, biometric authentication will be needed to change private data.
