Aside from the robots, I didn’t love this season all the way through.

My all-time favorite TV show is Love Death & Robots Season 4. I love when TV shows combine different stories into one. The Emmy-winning Netflix cartoon series for adults was created by Tim Miller and co-executive producer David Fincher. It is a collection of short sci-fi/fantasy films, usually no longer than 15 minutes, with amazing, creative stories and stunning animation.

I hate to say it, but I wouldn’t say that about Love Death & Robots Season 4 (also known as Vol. 4). I think it has the weakest group of films in the series so far. This time, unfortunately, there was one good thing about an otherwise mostly bad encounter. To start, I’ll say nice things about that episode before I talk about what I don’t like about the season as a whole.

Major Problem Holds Back Most of Love Death & Robots Season 4:

It’s important to note that I do not think Love Death & Robots Season 4 is a total waste of time. This includes “Zeke.” “Spider Rose,” directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson, was very touching for me as a pet owner, and “The Screaming of the Tyrannosaur,” directed by Tim Miller, was a good future chase movie. Even so, those shorts have the same flaw that I don’t like about the shorts.

From my point of view, most of the parts in this volume either don’t do a good job of executing decent ideas or do a bad job of executing weak ideas. Because the show always has story ideas I could never think of on my own and animation styles I have never seen before, I have always given it high marks. I don’t think Season 4 has much that is new or different in terms of animation, which is a shame because that could have made some of these shorts more interesting despite having pretty ordinary stories.

The idea behind Patrick Osborne’s “The Other Large Thing” is cute: a cat takes over the world with the help of a robot helper, but the story felt like it was just setting up a joke with a weak punch line. Even worse for me was Miller’s live-action short film “Golgotha,” which is about an encounter between a priest (Rhys Darby) and an alien. I think it doesn’t live up to its full promise in its 10-minute length, especially since it ends so quickly. I was also looking forward to the stop-animation comic “Smart Appliances, Stupid Owners,” which stars a lot of big names and has tech gadgets complain about the people who use them. But it wasn’t nearly as funny as it seemed to try to be.

Love Death & Robots Season 4 Shines with “How Zeke Got Religion”:

It was based on a short story by John McNichol with the same name, which was directed by Diego Porral. It’s about a group of pilots during World War II. One of them, Zeke (Keston John), is very different from the others because he doesn’t believe in God. But he starts to doubt what he believes when the Nazis send a horrible monster straight from Hell to attack his crew’s plane.

Love, Death & Robots isn’t quite a horror anthology TV show, but some episodes have been known to scare. “Zeke,” with its shockingly violent scenes and beautiful animation from the company Titmouse, is a great example of this. What really makes the creature feature stand out to me is its message about how important it is to question your beliefs (or lack thereof) and recognize that humans can’t fully understand the mysteries of the world. In terms of all-time great Love, Death & Robots shows, I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s one of the best, but it is by far my favorite from Season 4.

Love Death & Robots Season 4 Can’t Stop” by Fincher Left:

I was interested from the start of the first short story in this new book. “Can’t Stop” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed live, and it was animated? With David Fincher in charge? Yes, please!

But in the end, it wasn’t very impressive because it’s just a short music documentary with CGI marionettes instead of people. I enjoyed it, but I didn’t think it was as good as other things Love, Death & Robots has made. It’s cool to see Fincher try his hand at making music videos again, but I guess I was hoping for more from the man who directed “Bad Traveling,” which I think is the best part of this anthology series.

I’ve watched some of the series’ older shorts again, and I liked many of them more the second time. So, I might watch of Love Death & Robots Season 4on Netflix again someday and see how I feel then. But there are still a few parts I might not read.
