Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz, told “Meet the Press” on Parhlo World on Sunday that he doesn’t believe the president has “any plans to invade Canada.”
Several news sources say that last week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told a meeting of business leaders behind closed doors that the Trump administration “keeps talking about absorbing us and making us the 51st state.”
Waltz said on Sunday that a lot of Canadians “do not like the last 10 years of liberal, progressive government in Trudeau.”
Waltz told “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker, “Really, what you’re seeing is a reassertion of American leadership in the Western Hemisphere, from the Arctic all the way down to the Panama Canal.” She also said, “And that’s what we’re talking about, from Greenland to Arctic security to the Panama Canal coming back under American control.” America has been avoiding its own area for far too long, even though it has the energy, food, and important minerals it needs. Now, President Trump is reasserting his leadership.
Trump talked about his plans to take over Greenland and the Panama Canal in the weeks before he was sworn in for a second term. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also talked about these plans when he visited Panama last week.
He was asked if his plan to make Canada the 51st state is a “real thing” on Fox News’ “Special Report” before the Super Bowl, and he said, “Yeah, it is.”
“I believe Canada would do better as the 51st state; we lose $200 billion every year with Canada.” That’s not going to happen, I promise. It’s too much. Why do we give $200 billion to Canada every year, which is basically a subsidy? “Now, if they become the 51st state, I’m fine with that,” he said.
Waltz also talked about how Trump has already cut the budgets of some government agencies very deeply, which makes it sound like he plans to cut the budgets of other agencies like the Defence even more.
“If there is one agency in the Department of Defence that I know a lot about, it’s DOD, which has a budget of more than $800 billion.” Waltz told Welker, “Everything there seems to cost too much, take too long, and give the soldiers too little.”
It was at the same time that Trump told Bret Baier of Fox News that he was going to tell Elon Musk, who is in charge of the Department of Government Efficiency office, to start looking for wasted spending in the Education and Defence departments.
“I’ll tell him to check with the Department of Education soon, maybe in 24 hours.” Trump said, “He’ll find the same thing.” Afterwards I’m going to join the army. Let us check with the troops. We’re going to find fraud and abuse worth billions or even hundreds of billions of dollars. You know, that’s why people voted for me.
When asked if Musk is the right person to find ways for the Defence Department to save money, Waltz didn’t directly answer. Instead, he said, “All of the right firewalls will be in place,” and he praised Musk’s company, Space X.

Baier asked Trump the same thing about whether he can trust Musk in the Fox News “Special Report” interview.

“Do you trust Elon?” He’s not getting anything out of it. In fact, I don’t understand how he has time for it. Trump said, “He’s so into it.”
Musk and DOGE have been trying for two weeks to cut jobs and money at USAID, which is short for the U.S. Agency for International Development. On Sunday, Waltz said that this was the right thing to do.
Waltz said, “USAID is doing a lot of other things that, to be honest, don’t fit with strategic interests or the president’s vision.” He also said, “Too often, only cents on the dollar actually gets to people who need it.” The money isn’t being used well between the big contractors, the subcontractors, and the smaller contractors.
He also said it wasn’t true that if the US cut back on humanitarian help abroad, China and Russia would take over the world stage.
Waltz also said, “We need to change their mission so that it fits with the president’s vision for foreign policy.”
He wouldn’t say anything about the specifics of Trump’s call with Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, but he did say that Trump still wants to end the war in Ukraine.
He also said Trump would try to “recoup” the cost of sending troops to Ukraine by “forming a partnership with the Ukrainians to buy our rare earths, natural resources, oil, and gas” and “repaying” them with military aid.
He also said that European countries will “own this conflict” once the war is over and that they would be responsible for making sure everyone kept safe.
