Google’s Project Astra is a big attempt to make AI apps and “agents” that can understand in real time and across multiple modes. Tech from Project Astra won’t be released until at least next year.

The timeline was given by Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, during the company’s Q3 results call on Tuesday. He said, “Google is building places where AI can see and think about the world around you.” “Project Astra shows us what the future will be like.” Things like this will be available as early as 2025, thanks to our work.

Google showed off Project Astra at its I/O developer conference in May 2024. It includes a variety of technologies, such as AI helpers that can do things for users and smartphone apps that can understand what’s going on around them and answer questions about it.

Google showed a pre-recorded video of Project Astra at I/O. The prototype could answer questions about things that could be seen by a smartphone camera, such as the name of a part on a broken bike or the neighbourhood the user might be in.

This month, The Information claimed that Google was planning to release a consumer-focused agent experience as early as December. This agent would be able to do things like buy a product, book a flight, and more. That doesn’t seem likely anymore, unless the event in question has nothing to do with Project Astra.

Anthropic is one of the first companies to have a big generative AI model that can run PC apps and web browsers. However, Anthropic’s problems with many basic jobs show how hard it can be to make AI agents.
