The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai, said on Thursday that Prabhakar Raghavan is leaving his job as executive in charge of the company’s search engine and ads products. Nick Fox, who has worked for Google for a long time, will take over for Raghavan, who is now top technologist.
There was a statement from Pichai that Prabhakar was going to take a big step forward in his career. “He will become Chief Technologist, Google, after 12 years of leading teams across Google. This is a return to his computer science roots.” He will work closely with me and other Google leaders in this position to provide technical direction and guidance and help us build a culture of tech excellence.
The first AI tools for Gmail were Smart Reply and Smart Compose, which Raghavan led the team that made them. He has been in charge of the launch of AI Overviews, Circle to Search, and AI features in Maps and Shopping, like Immersive View and virtual try-on.
Fox “played a key role in shaping Google’s AI product roadmap and worked closely with Prabhakar and his leadership team,” according to Pichai.
Fox has helped bring Google Fi and RCS texting to market.
Pichai also said that the Gemini app team, which is run by Sissie Hsiao, will join Google DeepMind and work under Demis Hassabis.
The executive writes that combining the two teams “will improve feedback loops, allow fast deployment of our new models in the Gemini app, make our post-training work go more smoothly, and build on our great product momentum.”
Google’s Pichai says that the Google Assistant team will also join the Platforms and Devices team. This will put them closer to the goods they’re making.
