Have you ever thought about what it would be like to live on Mars? With NASA’s help, you can now try living on Mars in a game. The space agency wants people to live on a fake Mars for a year to get ready for sending people to explore the real Mars.
NASA has said that four people will live in a 1,700-square-foot Mars simulation during the second of three missions. NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, has a 3D-printed Mars home where the missions take place. The missions are called CHAPEA, which stands for Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog.
The simulation, called Mars Dune Alpha, shows how a future community on Mars might look, with places to live and work. It has four rooms for volunteers to live in, a workspace, a medical station, lounge areas, a kitchen, and places to grow food.
There will only be so many supplies, just like in real life on Mars. In the exercise, volunteers will go on fake space walks and have to take care of the habitat, grow crops, and work with robots. They will have to deal with the usual environmental problems that happen on Earth, as well as broken tools and communication delays.
People who want to join the ground operation have until April 2 to do so. It will begin in the spring of 2025. You must be between the ages of 30 and 55 and a “motivated” U.S. citizen or legal resident from the U.S.
You can’t smoke and must speak English. “Applicants should have a strong desire for unique, rewarding adventures and interest in contributing to NASA’s work to prepare for the first human journey to Mars,” the space agency says.
Those who want to apply must also have worked in STEM fields before. They must have a master’s degree in engineering, math, biology, or another science, as well as business experience or at least two years of doctoral work in these fields or have completed a test pilot program.
Or, if you have flown for 1,000 hours, that might also make you eligible. It might also help if you have been in the military or have a bachelor’s degree in a STEM area and four years of work experience.
People who volunteer can get paid for their work.
NASA is still working on the first CHAPEA journey to learn more about how to keep the spacecraft healthy and running well during trips to Mars.
Artemis is a similar mission to learn more about the moon. It will be used to send the first woman, person of color, and foreign partner astronaut to the moon.
NASA has sent rovers and other spacecraft to fly by Mars and study its surface. But no people have been to Mars, which has days that last 24.6 hours, which are called sols. 669.6 sols make up a year on Mars.

It has carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and argon gases in its atmosphere, which make the sky red and hazy. It can get as hot as 70 degrees Fahrenheit or as cold as -225 degrees Fahrenheit.
