Today, Bumble announced that it will be adding a new tool that uses AI to help users spot spam, scams, and fake profiles. The goal of the new tool, which is called Deception Detector, is to block harmful material before Bumble users even see it.
Based on their tests, Bumble found that the tool could immediately block 95% of accounts that were flagged as spam or scam accounts. Bumble saw a 45% drop in user reports of spam, scams, and fake accounts in the first two months of trying the tool. Deception Detector works with Bumble’s human review team.
A study done by Bumble itself showed that users are most worried about fake accounts and the chance of being scammed when they are online dating. This is why the company is releasing the new feature. The study also found that 46% of women were worried about how real the people they matched with on dating apps.
In a statement, Bumble CEO Lidiane Jones said, “Deception Detector is our latest innovation as part of our ongoing commitment to our community to help make sure that connections made on our apps are real.” The company’s original goal was to create fair relationships and give women the confidence to make the first move. “We know that trust is more important than ever in this age of AI, which is why we focus on women’s experiences online.”
Last year, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said that romance scams cost people $1.3 billion in 2022, with $4,400 being the average loss. The study said that romance scammers usually target people through direct messages (DMs) on social media sites, but they do use dating apps sometimes. 40% of people who lost money to a romance scam said they first met the scammer on social media, while 19% said it was on a website or app.
The new tool is the latest AI feature from Bumble that is meant to make the app better. Bumble added a “Private Detector” feature in 2019 that hides naked pictures and says so in chats. Users can then choose to view the picture or report the user.

AI is also being used by Bumble in Bumble For Friends, the company’s app for meeting new people. The app just added AI-powered icebreaker ideas that help people write and send their first message to someone based on their profile. You can change the question or ask for another idea, but each chat can only have one AI-made introduction.
Keep in mind that the Private Detector and the Deception Detector can be used in both Bumble and Bumble for Friends.
