Several news sources say that starting this month, Apple will pay artists more earnings if they have a spatial audio version on Apple Music.
A story from 9to5Mac says that the company will pay up to 10% more in royalties if all of an artist’s songs are in spatial audio. People don’t have to play the spatial audio version to get the extra money, though.
In a note sent to artists by Music Business Worldwide, the extra money is determined by dividing the version that is available in space by the version that is not available in space.
“Pro-rata shares for Spatial Available plays will be calculated using a factor of 1.1, while non-Spatial available plays will continue to use a factor of 1,” the note says. “This change is not only meant to reward better content, but also to make sure that artists are paid for the time and effort they put into mixing in Spatial.”
The note also said that the number of songs available in Spatial Audio has grown by 5,000% since Apple released it in 2021, but it didn’t give exact numbers.
The news came from Bloomberg in December that Apple was going to give artists incentives to add Dolby Atmos-mixed songs to Apple Music.
Amazon Prime Music, Tidal, and Deezer are all competitors to Apple Music that offer spatial deals. Hi-Fi has been something that Spotify has talked about for a few years, but it hasn’t come out yet.
The EU is pushing for rules to make sure that music streaming services give artists more of the money they make. This is happening at the same time that Apple makes its statement. The company didn’t say anything about the story right away.

Spotify changed its payment rules last year so that songs that have been played more than 1,000 times in the last year can only get paid.
