Google CEO Sundar Pichai told his employees in a memo that more layoffs are likely this year. This comes after the company fired over 1,000 people across different divisions last week and 100 people at YouTube.
The Verge said that Pichai’s letter said the company would have to make “tough choices” in order to reach its lofty goals.
During last year’s job cuts, the company fired 12,000 people, or 6% of its staff. The CEO said that this year’s cuts will not be as big.
“These role cuts aren’t as big as the ones last year, and they won’t affect every team.” I know it’s hard to see coworkers and teams suffer, though,” he told staff in an email.
“A lot of these changes have already been announced, but just to be clear, some teams will still have to make decisions about how to use resources throughout the year, and some roles may be affected.”
Over 1,000 people were let go from Google last week, affecting teams such as hardware, tech, ads, and services. The company also told TechCrunch at the time that Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman were leaving the company.
As part of a change, Google fired 100 YouTube employees on Wednesday.

“During the second half of 2023, many of our teams made changes to work better and more efficiently and to make sure their resources were focused on the most important products for them. This put us in the best possible position to take advantage of these opportunities.” “Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include getting rid of some roles around the world,” a Google spokesperson said in response to the layoffs at YouTube.
