The shortlists for the 96th Academy Awards have been released by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Greta Gerwig’s meta-comedy “Barbie” got the most mentions, with five. These included sound, original song for its three entries from Billie Eilish (“What I Was Made For? “), Dua Lipa (“Dance the Night”), and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt (“I’m Just Ken”); and original score from Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt. The area where “Barbie” fell short the most was in hair and makeup, which was also the area that gave us the most shocks.
The movies “Barbie,” “The Color Purple,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” did not make it to the lineup. The branch instead chose “Beau is Afraid” from A24 and “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” a horror movie from Universal Pictures.
Daniel Pemberton (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”), Ludwig Goransson (“Oppenheimer”), and the late Robbie Robertson (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) all wrote music for the awards. A good number of our veterans are also here, such as Thomas Newman (“Elemental”) and John Williams (“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”).
Some of the composers who made the shortlist are Black, like Jon Batiste (“American Symphony”) and Kris Bowers (“The Color Purple”); a female, legendary musician, Laura Karpman (“American Fiction”); and a nonbinary, Oscar-nominated composer for “Jackie,” Mica Levi (“The Zone of Interest”). Many people thought “The Holdovers” didn’t deserve to be submitted, so Mark Orton’s name being put forward was also a surprise. The branch made a good choice.

Original Song sent two songs from Warner Bros.’s “The Color Purple” (“Keep It Movin'” and “Superpower,” sung by Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino) and “Flora and Son” (“High Life” and “Meet in the Middle”). Additionally, Olivia Rodrigo’s hit song “Can’t Catch Me Now” from “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” gets one step closer to being nominated for an Oscar. It joins Lenny Kravitz’s “Road to Freedom” from “Rustin” and, surprisingly, Wes Anderson’s “Dear Alien” from “Asteroid City.” Anderson’s short film “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” and Pedro Almodovar’s “Strange Way of Life,” which stars Pedro Pascal, were both on the shortlist for best live-action film.
This month, Variety was the only publication to report on the 20 visual effects nominees. We already knew that Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” wouldn’t be moving on in the competition. In spite of this, his movie had good makeup, sound, and music. The Visual Effects Branch has to pick five nominees from the other ten movies. These include “Godzilla: Minus One” by Toho, “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” by Zack Snyder, and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” by Marvel Studios.
Along with “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which went on to win four Oscars last year, “Society of the Snow,” directed by J.A. Bayona and featuring four nominations, “Killers of the Flower Moon” by Martin Scorsese also did very well.
Many of the top contenders for documentary feature got places, such as “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” from Apple Original Films, “American Symphony” from Netflix, and “The Eternal Memory” from MTV Documentary Films. “The Mission” from National Geographic was surprisingly left out of the list, but “Bobi Wine: The People’s President” made it. Magnolia’s “Kokomo City” and “Little Richard: I Am Everything” were also left off, as was Wim Wenders’ “Anselm” by Janus and Sideshow, which did not get enough votes.
Just “Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World” from Romania and “The Settlers” from Chile were the only foreign movies that didn’t make the cut. Everyone you’d expect is on board, like “The Zone of Interest” from the UK and “Society of the Snow” from Spain.
The time to nominate people for an Oscar is from January 11 to January 16. The official winners will be announced on January 23.
