For his anxiety and depression, the “Friends” star used ketamine, but “ketamine in his system” couldn’t “be from that infusion therapy.”
Matthew Perry’s cause of death has been made public, almost two months after he died suddenly. The medical examiner in Los Angeles said the popular Friends star died from “acute effects of ketamine.” As factors, drowning, coronary artery disease, and the impact of buprenorphine (a drug used to treat opioid use disorder) were named. Perry was honest about his opioid problem that had been going on for years. A death accident has been ruled as the cause (“drug and drowning related”). He was 54 years old.
Perry’s health before he died is talked about in the medical report. It said that the star had “diabetes” and “a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/emphysema.” It said that Perry had used drugs in the past, but said that he had been clean for 19 months. He smoked a lot, but he didn’t use tobacco at that time. The most important thing that was said, though, was that Perry had “ketamine infusion therapy” just over two weeks before he died.
More and more people are getting ketamine therapy to help with their emotional health. You can get it done at centers near Los Angeles, or you can use a concierge service to do it at home. In the past, it was used to help PTSD, anxiety, depression, and more. The drug is usually given to people through an IV. Ketamine has been used as an anesthetic since the 1960s, but some people also use it for fun. Because it makes people feel trippy, it first became popular as a club drug in the 1990s.
It’s not clear when or how Perry used ketamine before he died.
“The exact method of intake in Mr. Perry’s case is unknown,” the autopsy report said, adding that the actor was using ketamine therapy to deal with his depression and anxiety. But, the coroner said that “the ketamine in his system at death could not be from that infusion therapy, since ketamine’s half-life is 3 to 4 hours, or less.” As was already said, he did go through infusion treatment more than a week ago.

“At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression,” it said. “Drowning contributes due to the likelihood of submersion into the pool as he lapsed into unconsciousness.”
Perry passed away in the afternoon of Oct. 28 at his home in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles. There were no illegal drugs found at the scene, but controlled drugs were found. The autopsy said that none of them were found by the pool. Perry was discovered dead in his hot tub and declared dead at the scene. It was decided that there was no foul play.
Perry died at 4:17 p.m., according to his death record. Keith Morrison, Perry’s dad, is named as the informant. This means that the Dateline host told the police who Perry was.
A police spokesperson told Yahoo Entertainment that officers were called to the block of “Blue Sail Drive at 4:10 p.m. for the investigation of the death of a male in his 50s.” The Los Angeles Fire Department was the first to arrive and said that when they got to the house, they found “an adult male unconscious in a stand-alone hot tub.”
“A bystander lifted the man’s head above the water and helped him to the edge,” Capt. Adam Van Gerpen said in a statement. “When firefighters arrived, they took him out of the water.” TMZ says that the witness was Perry’s assistant. The assistant allegedly found Perry in the hot tub when he got back to the house.
“Unfortunately, a quick medical exam showed the man had already died before first responders arrived,” the Fire Department said. The robbery homicide section of the Los Angeles Police Department was in charge of the investigation.
Perry’s autopsy was done on October 29, but the cause of death wasn’t determined until the lab report came back.
Perry had played tennis at a nearby country club in the morning, just hours before he died. The Friends star got into the sport while he was sober. Perry was very open about his long-term trouble with booze and prescription painkillers in his best-selling memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, which came out last year.
Friends co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer all said sad things about Perry’s death in public. Before his sudden death, the star was working on the Matthew Perry Foundation, which began on November 3. It aims at “identifying addiction as a disease, addressing the complex of stigmas that prevents individuals from seeking and accessing care, and fiercely advocating for better and more equitable treatment.”
In his book, Perry wrote, “When I die, I know people will talk about Friends, Friends, Friends.” “But when I die, it would be nice if Friends was way down the list of things I did to help other people, not after the things I did yourself.” It would be nice, but I know it won’t happen.
