The release of the public betas for iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1 on Thursday was a big step toward wide access for everyone.

People who have signed up for Apple’s public beta program will be able to try out the generative AI-powered app starting Thursday. The company has been talking about it since June.

The only language that Apple Intelligence can speak right now is U.S. English. The feature will also not work in the EU or the People’s Republic of China for a long time because of rules. People in the United States can use the tool on the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and any of the new iPhone 16 models.

As part of our study of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, TechCrunch has been testing the developer beta of iOS 18.1. Some of the best features are writing tools that work across systems, Clean Up for Photos, and the biggest update to Siri since the app’s release.

Anyone who has played around with ChatGPT or other programs like it knows what generative AI is used in Writing Tools. The system will rewrite text in a number of ways, such as professional, concise, and friendly. It will also proofread and summarize. Users can now get Smart Replies, message sorting, and summaries in Mail.

Siri gets a major makeover that starts with how the smart assistant looks on your computer. The bright Siri icon at the bottom of the screen has been changed with lit edges that won’t block the text. When you trip over your words, Siri can also better understand. If you can’t talk to the helper, you can type instead.

Product knowledge is the last big Siri update coming out Thursday. With it, users can ask the helper how to do a wide range of tasks on their devices, such as recording the screen or resetting an AirTag. There are still things that are being worked on, like talking AI, app context, and visual intelligence.

A new app called Clean Up, which is like Google’s Magic Eraser, is the most interesting update to Photos. When you move your finger around an item, the tool makes a background over it to get rid of it. The app’s search has been improved to work with more natural language questions, and users can now use a text prompt to create Memories.

Users must go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Join the Apple Intelligence waitlist and turn on the tool by hand. To join the public test programs, all you have to do is go to beta.apple.com.
