Everyone knew that the internet had all sorts of things for a long time, so it wasn’t a surprise when people started tweeting porn at each other. Many active NSFW (not safe for work) communities have been on X (formerly Twitter) for a long time. The social network unofficially let people post adult material, but its rules have never explicitly allowed or forbidden it.
That is now changing. These past few days, X added some parts to its rules that make it official for users to post adult and violent content on the platform, though there are still some restrictions. Users can now post NSFW content that they both agreed to, as long as it is clearly marked as such. The new rules also cover movies and pictures made by AI.
Although the change to the rules came as no surprise, X has already tried hosting adult content with NSFW groups when Elon Musk was in charge.
“We think that people should be able to make, share, and read sexual content as long as they agree to do so.” “Expressing sexuality through art, whether it’s written or drawn, is legal,” X’s page on “adult content” rules says.
“We believe adults should be able to choose to interact with and create content that reflects their own thoughts, feelings, and experiences, even when those things have to do with sexuality.” “To keep things fair, we limit access to Adult Content for kids and adults who choose not to see it,” the page says.
The rules for violent material on X are similar, but X says the content shouldn’t be “excessively gory or depicting sexual violence.” The platform still doesn’t let material that directly calls for or encourages violence appear.
The reason the company lets violent content show up is so that people can talk about what’s going on in the world and include pictures and videos.
People on the social network can mark their posts as having sensitive content, and people under 18 or who haven’t added their birthdates to their profile can’t see those posts.
X has never really banned porn, but these clauses could let it build services around adult material. For example, it could make a service similar to OnlyFans to make more money.
Reuters reported in 2022 that internal company documents showed that about 13% of posts on the site that year had adult content. Since then, it looks like there is more adult material on X, especially since there are so many porn bots on the site.
The social network is now officially letting adult content on. Regulators will be closely watching X as it works to remove child sexual abuse and non-consensual porn content.

Australia fined X in October for not telling them about child abuse material. Around the same time, India told several social networks, including X, to take CSAM down from their sites.
