There will be new iPad Pros, iPad Airs, the Apple Pencil, and maybe even the M4 chip.

It’s still hard to believe that the “Let Loose” event on May 7 is even going to happen. This event was planned even though Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference is still more than a month away. The company felt there was enough news to support its own event. The focus will be on iPads, such as the iPad Pro and iPad Air. The Apple Pencil, which has been ignored for a long time, is finally getting some love. It was, after all, the main point of the invitation to the event.

There have also been rumors about a possible M4 reveal. If it’s true, it would be a big change to how often Apple releases new chips, which hasn’t been very steady over the past year. The most likely reason for the change is that Microsoft will show off its own ARM-based chips at the end of the month at its Build conference. There is talk that Microsoft’s AI-focused tech will beat Apple’s M3 chips.

It’s been only about seven months since Apple announced three M3 chips. That’s pretty fast for a new chip, but keep in mind that the company is said to have been working on a more staggered release schedule last year, but problems in the supply chain slowed them down. With this new plan, it’s possible that more M4 SKUs will be announced at WWDC in a month.

Up until then, it’s possible that the newest chip will first show up on an iPad, especially the iPad Pro. At the very least, the top-of-the-line iPad needs a new look. The most recent model, which has an M2 chip, came out near the end of 2022. For the past few years, Apple has been blurring the line between the iPad and the Mac. So why not give the tablet new chips first for a change?

It is said that the Pro’s other big change is the long-awaited switch to an OLED screen. Bloomberg says this needs to happen right away because tablets are “in a deep funk right now.” The iPad was one of Apple’s most popular products, but those days don’t seem to be coming back.

The company still leads the category, but tablets had a bad year in 2023, giving Apple a big piece of a pie that is getting smaller. According to Canalys, the market as a whole shrank by 10% last year. Apple needs a boost right now because the Vision Pro is off to a slow start. However, a new iPad doesn’t really fit the bill.

There will be two new iPad Airs, one with an 11-inch screen and the other with a 12.9-inch screen. According to the latest report, the more affordable models will still get an M2 chip. If the M4 does come out next week, though, they might get an extra boost as well.

The Apple Pencil seems to be ready for its big debut, even though it is still a fairly niche product. It is said that the pen will be getting an update with a new feature called “squeeze detection.” This was hinted at in an earlier iPad update. The docket could also have haptic input and magnet tips that can be switched out. Find My support could also show up, which would be great for an accessory that is always getting lost. Apple’s new Magic Keyboard makes the iPad look even more like a laptop than it did before, which makes the iPad and Mac look more alike.

If you’re talking about Macs, I wouldn’t be shocked if the company sneaked in a couple of updates after the M4. It’s just as likely, if not more likely, that Apple is leaving big Mac additions for WWDC in June.

For people on the West Coast, the event starts early. The show starts at 7 a.m. PT/10 a.m. ET. You can watch it live here, and to get the latest news as it happens, follow
