(Parhlo World) -The Information reported on Sunday that President-elect Trump’s transition team has asked Google, Microsoft, Meta Platforms, and three other big tech companies to a meeting in the middle of December to talk about how to stop people from selling drugs online.
The report also said that on Thursday, staff from the three tech giants, as well as Snap and TikTok, were emailed by someone working for Trump’s transition team and Jim Carroll, who was Trump’s drug czar during his first term. The emails were meant to invite the staff to a call.
The person told the Information that the people in charge of the transition want to know from the companies what their top goals are and what might make it hard to deal with problems related to the sale of drugs online.
Parhlo World asked Google, Microsoft, Meta, Snap, TikTok, and the Trump transition team for comments, but they didn’t reply right away.
Trump has promised to make Mexico do more to stop the flow of fentanyl to the U.S., which has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans. He has also said that he will put high taxes on goods from Mexico and Canada if they don’t stop trafficking in fentanyl and letting people come to the U.S. illegally.
In a post on Truth Social in November, Trump also said that he “will be working on a large scale United States advertising campaign, explaining how bad fentanyl is for people to use.”
That March, The Wall Street Journal said that U.S. officials were looking into Meta’s part in the drug sales and distribution on Facebook and Instagram to see if it made money from it.
