Hackers were able to get into the accounts of Paris Hilton, CNN, and Sony, among other famous people and brands on TikTok’s video platform. The company’s security team is now fixing the problem. The video app maker, which is owned by ByteDance, didn’t say anything about the attack or how it was stopped. Instead, it only said that it had taken steps to stop the attack and make sure it wouldn’t happen again.
As Semafor and Forbes already said, the attack seems to have involved malware sent through TikTok’s direct messages, which may have made it harder for account owners to get to their TikTok profiles. It wasn’t clear right away what the hackers were trying to do because none of the accounts that had been hacked had started to post anything.
Semafor says that a hacker got into CNN’s account last week, which is why the account had to be shut down for a few days. The news group said it was working with TikTok to take extra steps to keep the account safe in the coming days, including during the U.S. election.
When asked for a statement, TikTok wouldn’t give more information about the attack or how it was stopped so as not to “tip off” possible bad guys.
A spokesman for the company said, “Our security team is aware of a possible exploit that targets a number of high-profile accounts.” “Steps have been taken to stop this attack and keep it from happening again.” We are working directly with account owners who have been affected to get access back if needed.
There are doubts about TikTok’s power in the U.S. at the moment of the strikes. In April, President Biden signed a bill that will force ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, to sell the app or be banned from doing business in the U.S. He did this because he was worried about national security. It will be against the law for app shops to sell TikTok when the law goes into effect if ByteDance doesn’t sell.

The company has since sued the U.S. government over the law, and the case will stay in court for many months. Between now and then, Donald Trump, who used to criticize TikTok and was the first president to try to stop it in the U.S., has now used it to campaign.
